Novi Sad (former Ujvidek) - Ujvidek, Serbia and Montenegro
4 Stars  This place was Great visited Aug 19, 2006
Today this city is known as Novi Sad and it is the capital or Vojvodina which is a province in Serbia. I was traveling from Vrsac, Serbia to Budapest, Hungary and stopped for one day to see Novi Sad and Petrovaradin which is on the other side of the Danube. Novi Sad has many old, historic buildings from the Austro-Hungarian period. The city center has a pedestrian area filled with shops and outdoor cafes. The Jewish Synagogue is well preserved and in addition to services, it is also used for concerts. If you are looking for a quick lunch try the Banja Luka Restaurant. Their specialty is cevapi which are skinless sausage that are grilled and served with onions and bread. Just ask any taxi driver for directions to the restaurant. On the other side of the Danube river is Petrovaradin Fortress. It is still well preserved and offers excellent views of Novi Sad, The Danube river and surrounding area. Off to one side is an artist colony where local artist work and display their work for sale. Einstein also lived in Novi Sad for a short time with his first wife who was born in this city. If you are traveling to Beograd, Budapest or Timisoara, it is worth a trip to Novi Sad.
