Like much of Dalmatia, Hvar is blossoming with colour and life, with vineyards, wild herbs and citrus groves filling the air with delicious fragrances. The island is sprinkled with lavender fields (Hvar is sometimes referred to as "Lavender Island") and the plant has acquired something of a mythical status in the region. Said to have soothed Jesus in his crib, lavender is now bagged and sold across the island. This bountiful, lush green appearance makes Hvar one of the most attractive areas in Croatia, even before you've investigated the beaches and boutiques. Hvar's seemingly endless sunshine attracts people keen to relax by the shore, and the shimmering blue seas, pristine sand and various water sports mean that it's easy to spend hours at the seaside. The vibrant nightlife and ornate Venetian Architecture of Hvar Town are major draws to the island, while ancient towns such as Stari Grad and Vrboska are fascinating places to explore. Jelsa and Sucuraj are the best places to visit to taste some of the excellent local wines, while Pakleni Otoci is one of the prettiest of the village locations on the island.

Amazing mixture of ancient and modern, I mean really ancient (the oldest community theatre in Europe is in Hvar town), and really modern - 20-30m yachts in Hvar harbour. But this are just extremes, in between is the world of smells, stone, sea, sun, friendly people..
