Mutiny On The High Sea - Fethiye, Turkey
3 Stars This place was Average visited May 14, 2006
Mutiny On The High Seas

Right let me first start of with saying that i have no problem what so ever with paying full price for a beer. I don't even have a problem with being slightly ripped off when being on a fabulous cruise in the middle of the mediteranean. However, I flat out refuse to pay 8 Lira (8 Aussie Dollars) for a 50 Oz beer.

The Introduction

The birds were singing and the children laughing, the clothes were washed for the first time in months and day looked set to be a crystal clear with not a cloud in the sky. The birds were singing and the children laughing, the clothes were washed for the first time in months and day looked set to bse a crystal clear with not a cloud in the sky. Good morning ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Olympos yachting... wait a minute i was booked to go with V-Go Yachting whats going on!!!! Ahh its all good, only 2 people were booked to go with V-Go so Fez travel (The company that i'm dealing with) moved both of us to another company.

Welcome to the Gullet 'Crnkryr 3' said the skipper. A lively old chap whos jovial personality conceeled a iron will and a stubborn streak a mile wide. 'I hope that you enjoy your 4 day cruise to Olympos there are just a few safety measures that we have to go through...'

As I tuned out the captains drill on safety i turned my attention to the other members of the crew. First to catch my eye was the rough and tumble chef. Another jovial turkish man that certainly looked like he knew his way around a kitchen not to mention probably every single street bar and tavern in Fetihya and Olympos. After that came the deck hands. 2 Burley youths that could stand their own in the face of the fiercest storm and the largest bouncer.

Hour 4

'Beer Beer Beer give me a beer beer beer give me a beer beer beer......' How much for a beer' '8 Lira' .... 'Ha ha ha nice joke how much?' '8 Lira'

Hour 6 - Negotiations

Claudia immediately took offense as to the daylight robery that we were going to be extorted in order to pay for one 20 Oz beer. After negotiations round 1 the captain agreed to 3.50 for a small beer ... if you buy 6.

This simple matter off a disagreement over beer prices quickly started to blow out into demands for refunds... something had to be done!!!!

Brian and myself, both so desperate for a beer, swam over to one of the other charter companies and asked how much for a beer. After paying 3.50 for a large beer and treading water and drinking it we realised something really had to be done. One phone to our tour companies and 6 radio conversations later 2 phone calls to Olymypos yachting we asked the captain to radio the other vessels in port and confirm how much a large beer cost!

Huzzah we got the price down to 4 Lira for a large knock one up for team Bragg and Claudia (Those of you that know my mother would be proud... I didn't know i had such great *negotiation skills*)

Thats all we are all happy and now going to and have breakfast

Fethiye Tourist Town - Fethiye, Turkey
5 Stars This place was Amazing visited May 11, 2006
Fetiya is an absolutely beautiful city, Traditionally the port for connecting turkey to the island of cyprus Fetiya now derives most of its income from tourism and it certainly seems to do quite well.

The most particulary amusing feel of this city is that store owners don't seem to change the prices of their products from month to month. Oh No! Instead all they do is change the currency tag. What costs 8 Lira in the winter months instead costs 8 Euro through march to may and when all the english package tourists arrive they simply change the Euro Sign with Great British Pounds!!!

I was able to get 70% off a couple of shorts and shirts just by going to the store owner and peeling off first the pound and the euro symbol and then he gave me a discount if i didn't tell any of the tourists that were in his shop!

Anyway after chatting with a lovely pair of british tourists they bought me lunch and beer while we chatted away the afternoon. Five hours later i now have my 5th contact in london and a place to stay while i find my feet! Thanks Alex!

Anyway thats all from Fetiya folks I'm boarding a boat in half an hour! See you on the other side (4 or 5 days)

A Gorge With No End - Fethiye, Turkey
5 Stars This place was Amazing visited May 11, 2006
Greetings again from southern turkey On the road to fetiya i've seen carpet information centre that is sponsored by the turkish department of commerce deliberately to inform tourists about the manifacture of legitimate turkish carpets. Basically it comes down to the number of knots per square centimeter. Cotton and wall quality varies between 50 and 200 knots while silk on silk (The most prized and most expensive) can have up 500 knots per square centimeter. After that inofrmation was given did they then try and sell us government sponsored carpets carpets by the thousands in all shapes and sizes were thrown in front of a bunch of people that obviously were of the wrong demografic that would be conducive to the sale of carpets. In other words they tried to sell 3000 - 25000 dollar carpets to a bunch of university students.

Anyway after the carpets we stopped off in saklikent gorge and went wite water tiring stopped for lunch and then walking up the most amassing gorge that you'll ever se. When i say walking i mean wading, the water was about knee deep the entire trip and about 5 degrees C but the view was incredible! The gorge is roughly the same width the entire way through filled with amazing water falls that you have to climb over and swimming holes that are over your head! The temperature steadily falls as the ceiling closes in around you and the sunlight disappears as canyoning slowly but steadily turns to underground caving. This underground river would be fantastic to explore for a couple of days if you had the right gear. Perfectly smoothed out tunnels through the rock provide evidence of much higher water levels and more ferocious passage in ages past.

The bus trip has been fantastic, Amy (Fez travel and all around top mate) has been fantastic and is off to celebrate her 28th birthday in Olympus after dropping me off at Fetiya for a 4 day cruise on the Mediteranean from Fetiya to Olympus.

In Olympus i'll be meeting up with Cindy and Amy to continue her birthday celebration and also to hopefully reclaim my towel from Cindy!

Anyway on to fetiya the mediteranean awaits

A Little Piece Of Heaven - Selcuk, Turkey
5 Stars This place was Amazing visited May 8, 2006
Right where have i been for the last week and what have i been doing! Well the last week has been the highlight of the trip so far!!! I know i say that every week but really guys it has been. Jeff and Atilla's (The partnership that is Atilla's Getaway) www.atillasgetaway.com have been probably the best possible hosts in one of Turkey's most famous ancient cities

After having one of the hotel guests tip off Atilla that i was in Information Technology pirmarily business analysis i was quickly seized upon for 2 days work. The result being free board and accomodation for 8 days including all meals and free drinks at the bar. This friendly hostel is situated in Selcuk, Turkey and is considered to be the number one hostel in southern turkey.

Wine tasting, drinking, carpet making, more drinking, hiking, water, drinking and partying i finally bid goodbye to Atilla and Jeff but not before landing finding a home away from home where people come for 2 days and end up staying a week, 3 original references signed by Jeff J.P Queensland and making a firm friend and brilliant contact both for more work of the same in turkey and as one of 'the' people to know in turkish tourism.

In addition i've arranged to meet up with Ged and Cindy (Bright attractive Swiss lass that speaks with mostly Irish accent) in Spain for the La Tomatina which is going to be the biggest food fight in the world each year. In addition Fleur and Margo (Australian and New zealand ex pats living in London) are both handy people to know for when i'll finally make it to the UK.

Thats all folks, now i'm off to Fetia (I'll change the spelling later) to board a 5 day boat trip arround the southern mediterarnean See you on the other side.

A New Change - Liman Vatheos, Greece
3 Stars This place was Average visited May 5, 2006
After saying goodbye to my Australian drinking buddies that i met in paradise, I packed up my tent, took a shower and then bid farewell to paradise. After walking out the gate i arrived at the local public bus station only to find out that i had 3 hours to wait. Since the walk was only about 5 kilometers i gave the bus the flick and started to trek my way across Mykonos island to Mykonos Town. 2 minutes into my journey i was picked up by a friendly Mykonosian concrete truck driver and given a lift half way into town. Turns out that you really can get used to the incredible sunsets and stunning beaches. After being dropped off i moseyed on into town and found a net cafe in which to update my blogs spent a few hours poking my nose around Mykonos city which unfortunately really does not have much to do apart from drinking.

Catching the 3:30 bus to the new port of Mykonos i was informed that that the ferry i was waiting for was suffering a 5 hour delay. 5 hour delays aren't exactly uncommon in greece as most ferry / bus and train drivers tend to operate on greek time. Greek Time: Adjective: Literally meaning: 'Arrive when we want to, stay as long as we want and then leave when we want to'

Having a few hours to kill i decided to go for walk up the mountains where i stumbled apon Basil and his goats (Apologies go out to my Bro Basil this guy was nothing like you). Basil was a kindly old gentlemen that litterlally lived in a run down old villa on the top of a wind swept mountain surrounded by old roman style fences, tundra and rocks. He is kept company by only his faithful herd of goats and so the old man was grateful for my companionship.

Despite an impressive language barrier, i soon learned that all of the surrounding land had be 'Loaned' to him by the city government (that had no better use for it) in order that he may feed and maintain his herd of goats. Basil has never been off the Island of Mykonos and was been born there in July of 1936.

After my farm vacation (3 hours), watching the sunset (2 hours) finding my way of the mountain back to the port in the dark (2 hours and one semi sprained ankle) i was informed that the ferry to Samos was delayed by another 4 hours.

When your on your own awaiting a ferry / bus / flight /train that is delayed I have quickly learned that the time can be passed relatively quickly by lively and interesting conversation with your fellow travelers.

Enter, Aaron (Sydney, Australia, 21), Sarah (B.C, Canada, 19) and her sister Amanda (B.C, Canada 23). These 3 fellow backpackers quickly wiled away the hours of what ultimately ended up being a 9 hour delay (2 hour greeks time).

The ferry ride was fantastic, the 6 foot swell could certainly be felt on this small ferry and i loved every minute of the slightly turbulent voyage across the Mediterranean sea through the depths of night and early hours of the morning.

8 Hours later i arrived to find myself in a different land. Where the majority of the Cyclades islands are little more than impressive lumps of rock the isle of Samos was covered in green. Trees, shrubs and olive trees covered the landscape, however the most noticeable difference was the orange terra-cotta tiled roofs that absolutely everyone of the buildings in the main town adorned.

After a leisurely breakfast / lunch / afternoon with Amanda and Sarah, Aaron and I bid goodbye to the fair canadian ladies and moseyed on down to the port of Samos to say goodbye to the beautiful land and beautiful ladies of greece.
