Shelby, Montana, May 14th, 2004 - Shelby, Montana
4 Stars  This place was Great visited May 14, 2004
Good thing the checkout time at the motel in Kalispell was 12:00AM. At 11:00AM it was still only 47 degrees, but at least it was partly cloudy with plenty of sun. Out of the motel at around 11:30, under cloudy skies (how quickly the weather can change here) with a storm brewing right over our heads. Slight rain as we pulled out of the motel turning North on Highway 93 and then East on Highway 2 towards West Glacier Park, quickly leaving the rain and clouds behind us. Weather got a little warmer as we progressed towards West Glacier Park, then it started to get real cold as we ascended the mountain. Several times dark clouds threatened rain and sometimes we got a drop or two. Near the summit we could see that some of the mountain was covered with clouds and occassionally we would see a snow flake or two. As we entered Marias Pass (5,216 feet) we found plenty of snow. As we pulled into East Glacier Park gasoline station to refuel, it started snowing real hard and got extremely cold. Didn’t last too long though, just long enough to make me wonder what I was doing up here. After leaving East Glacier Park and the mountain behind us, we still were surrounded by snow for as far as the eye could see. This heavy snow was the reason that we had to spend the 4 days in Kalispell. East Glacier Park had received 14 inches on Tuesday and there was plenty of snow left on the ground all the way to Shelby. Although we didn’t get very far into Glacier National Park, Peggy says she’s seen all she wants to see of it. Me too, I’m ready for some sun. This cold weather making us hit the road late and stop early cuts into our mileage. Into the motel around 3:30PM after only 156 miles today, 10,952 miles this trip, 132,612 total miles.

Kalispell, Montana, May 13th, 2004 - Kalispell, Montana

It did snow today, if you can call a few heavy flakes that fell before daylight and stayed around for a while, since the temperature was 24 degrees. And we did get out today. Waited until 12:00PM to make the trip North to the Canadian Border to get ABC’s of Touring pictures of Canada and British Columbia. Mission accomplished. Eighty-three points now. It was a cold ride though. We followed Highway 93 North through Whitefish and Eureka into Roosville, Montana, where Highway 93 crosses into Canada. Shortly after we passed through Whitefish, we encountered a short, but cold shower. It did get warmer as we proceeded Northward and actually was quite warm at the Canadian border. Mostly the temperatures remained in the upper 40s. The temperature was supposed to be 54 degrees in Kalispell, but upon our return we found that the temperatures never made it into the 50s. We’re out of here tomorrow and headed East to Shelby,Montana and then another short trip North for a picture of the Alberta sign. It is going to be cold tomorrow again and there are some showers predicted, but it’s time to move on. Back into the motel after a cool but beautiful ride around the West side of Glacier National Park of 148 miles, 10,796 miles this trip, 132,456 total miles.

It didn’t snow today, at least not yet. It was down into the low 20s this morning but the temperatures climbed to 43 degrees by noon time when we left to pick up the motorcycle. Kind of hated to take it out of the shop, since it will have to sit out in the cold tonight, but we needed it to go to Wal-Mart and then we are heading up into British Columbia tomorrow for ABC’s of Touring pictures of Canada and British Columbia. Hope we can get that done with out hitting any rain or snow. Bike was ready and the group was friendly as before and we were off to Wal-Mart where we replentished some of our supplies and got a roll of pictures developed. Have already put them on line. It sure is easier now that Wal-Mart furnishes a CD with the pictures. Only 6 miles today, 10,648 miles this trip, 132,308 total miles.
