West Palm Beach, Florida, April 18th, 2004 - West Palm Beach, Florida

Made the short trip to the Palm Beach HOG’s "Chili Cook-off" event in John Prince Park in West Palm Beach. Biggest event ever for our HOG Group. A lot of volunteers did an awful lot of work. Don’t know how much money was raised for Hospice of Palm Beach, but I’ll bet it sets a record. And oh, yes, we didn’t win the motorcycle! Weather turned out beautiful, if not a little cool. And I really did enjoy seeing many of our friends in the HOG group and was surprised to find that a number of them are following our progress through this site. I did note that the temperature only made it to 78 degrees, while the mid-west, where we should be, is having mid 80 degree weather. I think the cold weather follows us. Next Sunday should find us in Kansas City and I’ll bet it will probably be cold an rainy. Not many miles, only 43 today; 6,775 miles this trip, 128,435 total miles.

Not out too early today. Trip to grocery store to get some food so we won’t have to eat out. Back home and did some repairs to the mobile home from the wind storm that happened while we were away. Made reservations and planned for the trip back to the Northwest starting on Tuesday, following the "Chili Cook-Off" on Sunday and Peggy’s business in West Palm Beach on Monday. Not many miles again, only 10 today, 6,732 this trip, 128,392 total miles.

Out real early this morning, off to Jupiter to get new rubber for the back wheel and a routine fluids change. I’ve got a good "wrench" and he doesn’t charge me "an arm and a leg". But he always argue’s about the size tire I want to run on the rear. I run a 140 (Sportsters usually run a 130), but I like the larger tire, so as usual after telling me a 140 won’t fit, he goes ahead and puts it on and then takes it for a test spin. It works fine and gives me a lot more support for the extra weight of riding two up with luggage. Out to lunch at Wendy’s (got to get back on my diet), stop at Publix for laundry soap, and a stop at the bank for money and then back to the house to wash clothes and get ready to move on down to West Palm Beach for the "Chili Cook-off" and to take care of some other business. Total of only 22 miles today, 6,722 this trip, 128,382 total miles.

It's supposed to be warm in Florida. The cold weather seems to be following us. Where we should be is in the Northwest, but they are having bad weather also, rain with some snow and freezing temperatures. Considered traveling through some of the central western states to pick up some points for the ABC’s of Touring. Not good either, snow showers in Salt Lake City, Nebraska, Kansas, even snowed in Tenneessee. We headed back to attend the Alabama State Rally, but was really to early, since it is next week. So we decided to attend our local HOG Groups annual fund raiser, the "Chili Cook Off" event in West Palm Beach. And while we were in the area we could wash clothes, get my regular "wrench" to do maintenance on the bike and put on a new rear tire. When we woke up this morning is was 38 degrees, by the time we left the motel at 10:00AM it had warmed up to 43 degrees. We bundled up and hit the road in the cold again! Fast route to follow again today, South on Interstate 75 to Ocala and then pick up the Florida Turnpike (fee’s have been raised again), for the remaining trip to Indiantown Road in Jupiter, Florida. We stopped at a Wal-Mart and dropped off two rolls of film to be developed and then on to visit my "wrench" to make sure he had everything for tomorrow morning and then to a Wendy’s for supper. Went back to Wal-Mart to pick up the pictures (I’ll have them on line tomorrow) and then on to PGA Boulevard. Into the house for two days after a cold, real windy ride of 314 miles, 6,700 miles this trip, 128,360 total miles.

Lake City, Florida, April 14, 2004 - Lake City, Florida

By midnight the temperature was 35 degrees, and it is strange to see the predicted low at 36 (changed from 38) and an actual temperature of 35 degrees. Wind predicted for today was 15MPH with gusts up to 25MPH. That part they got right. Anyway the temperatures had made it up to 58 degrees by the time we left the motel at 10:00AM. Not a cloud in the sky, but the wind kept it plenty cold. Temperatures were around 66 when we arrived in Lake City. Straight shot again today, East on Interstate 10, all the way to Interstate 75, then South on Interstate 75 to Lake City. Into the motel at 3:00PM, after a fairly nice ride of 253 miles, 6,386 miles this trip, 128,046 total miles.
