We arrived at Rapid City on June 28 and stayed at an RV park called Rushmore Shadows. Being a holiday weekend the park was very crowded, but we think we had the best site in the park. We were parked on the edge of the property and the only neighbor we had was up the hill from us, so we couldn’t really see them. We looked up some friends that we worked with in Florida and they very graciously took us on a tour of the city and showed us some of their favorite places including Stavkirke Chapel. Built in Rapid City in 1969, the unique "Stavkirke" is an exact copy of the famous 830 year-old Borgund Church in Norway. The intricate wood carvings, strange dragon heads and ingenious pegged construction make it a place of unusual interest. Situated in a park-like setting surrounded by forest, it is also a place of great beauty.. A "Stabbur" with grass roof was imported from Norway to be a reception center and gift shop.

We left Duck Creek on June 26 and began our drive to South Dakota. On US-89 just before I-70 we drove through a beautiful canyon with mountains all around. The area is called the Big Rock Candy Mountain, and you can see why. Later as we drove up I-15 between Scipio and Spanish Fork I couldn’t help singing America the Beautiful as we viewed the purple mountain majesty and amber waves of grain.

While we were still at Duck Creek we took a trip to Bryce Canyon. We traveled there the back way, via Mammoth Canyon and 143 to Panguitch. We parked at Ruby’s Inn and took the shuttle to Bryce Point. We hiked to Inspiration Point and took the shuttle back to Ruby’s for the buffet. After lunch we went to the Visitor’s Center to see the movie. We had to sit through it twice because we both fell asleep. Later we took the shuttle to Sunset Point and walked Sunrise Point

We left I-15 at Scipio to work our way over to SR-89. Soon we began to see the coral mountains so typical of Southern Utah. By the time we got to Highway 14 we were already at over 7,000 feet. We had climbed without realizing it, so it was only another thousand feet or so to our destination at Duck Creek Village. We were here to help build a log church with other MMAPers

Still on I-84 we continued southeast until we hit I-15 in Utah. The mountains along that route are magnificent seeming to go straight up a short way from the highway. We had planned to stop for the night south of Salt Lake City, but the late afternoon traffic and 90 degree temperatures chased us down to Spanish Fork where we stayed at a deserted fair ground with hook-ups. We unhooked and went shopping for groceries to take to the mountain, hoping they would last three weeks. That’s not easy with only six cubic feet of space in the refrigerator.
