A new establishment on the outskirts of the village, in a pastoral river-side setting with views of Volcan Licancabur (on the border with Bolivia). The bedroom block is arc-ed around the central foyer/lounge/dining building, and an adjacent bathing pool. All the facilities were spotlessly clean and well serviced. Laundry was quick, cheap and to an acceptable standard.

For an outpost this hotel exceeded expectations, and deserves to succeed. It is a good hike from the village centre, but an on-site bus will take you there, and meet you at a set time to return, for a modest fare. However most Atacama tour buses include the hotel on their pick-up circuit.

Lonely Planet's prediction that this conveniently situated town hotel is destined to be Sucre's best is probably not an exaggeration. The old-style colonial architecture with period furnishings is complemented by all modern comforts impeccably maintained. Together these made for a most enjoyable short stay.

A cellar with pre-Colombian artifacts on display was an additional cultural amenity we appreciated.

A Reunion for 40+ former employees of the Consortium of International OIl Companies that operated the Iranian oil installations, prior to the Shah being deposed 30 years ago, was based here in September 2007. It provided good class accommodation and banquet facilities, and was ideally placed for day trips to Niagara, Castle Loma, the CN Tower and Royal Ontario Museum etc. The concierge was particularly helpful to delegates seeking specific advice on making their own excursions about town. And the rates charged were very reasonable.

It has not always been the case that you could find good class comfort in the smaller towns of the United Kingdom, but finding myself stuck at nightfall between Aberdeen and John o'Groats this hostelry in Brora was a revelation. Attractively positioned on a headland above the small harbour, close to the railway station, the Royal Marine and Links offered excellent cuisine and good accommodation. At a price of course, rather above the usual B&B in these parts. Nevertheless I rated it as value for money and would gladly return if I ever find myself in these parts again.
