This hotel bills itself as a romantic retreat, and well it should, for it is on a large country tract well out of town and away from the highway. The breakfast was very good and ample, served in a dining room overlooking an English garden.
However, we were unfortunate enough to stay there on a weekend when the hotel, which has a ballroom and extensive grounds, was hosting a wedding. First, the groomsmen took over what we had been told was a library for overnight guests only, so they could use it as a changing room or something (right next to our room, with men chattering and doors slamming constantly for an hour). Then, the wedding event and clean-up afterward went on well past its 10 p.m. deadline. Guests were shouting up and down the halls, going past roped-off areas into guest-room areas, staff were rolling carts over the hard floors, and making our evening most unenjoyable. We could hear the racket even in our room -- with our room AC set on blower and quiet music playing from our laptop's CD drive -- owing partly to the hard surfaces throughout this castle-inspired building. Only one person, the so-called innkeeper, from the hotel management staff was on duty, and she was busy with the event. We would have had to intrude on the wedding party itself just to find her and complain, so we chose to stay in our room and buffer the sound as well as we could. After all, we kept thinking it should have been over any minute.
What was even worse was the management's attitude. We did complain to the "innkeeper" at breakfast the next morning, at which time the hotel could have offered us a late checkout or other goodwill concession, but we got excuses instead. We mentioned it again at checkout and got a similar response from a different employee. The owner of the hotel, unfortunately, was not on site. They obviously prefer the money-making large events to overnight guests. We received half-hearted apologies, excuses and justifications for the wedding group's behavior (they were younger than most groups who use the hotel; they had been cheerleaders at school -- whatever relevance that has, escapes me). What we should have been offered was a partial credit toward our stay.
Also, this hotel has no TV, phones or Internet access in the rooms. That is a positive for those seeking a restful experience. The breakfast was very good and ample, though not gourmet. Nevertheless, we will not return to this hotel.
