member icon Beware - theft!
Posted Jun 25, 08 by travelbex, 1 reviews

Theft from room! Hotel management unresponsive, evasive, and then rude about following up after I reported the theft!

I stayed at the Wyndham Orlando Resort for a conference in April 2008 and had a number of items (electronics and non-valuables) stolen from my room when I went to dinner just after checking in. They found a few personal items of mine in other people's rooms (creepy!) but most of my things are gone. It seems like a safe place with families, kids swimming, groups of schoolkids, people attending conferences ... but it is not! Beware if you stay here -- don't get a ground floor room and if you do, don't leave anything in there. People can get in the back door (I didn't use it, but the hotel tells me they think that's how someone got in). Maybe someone opened the door, or maybe someone on the staff left it unlocked to come back in later ... or maybe they came in through the front or adjoining room ... but however they got in my room, please be careful if you stay here. Other people attending my conference had issues with the in-room safes. Hotel security had to let me in the front door of my room since the thieves had locked it from the inside, and as I saw, anyone can get through the locks very quickly (probably true in any hotel).

As bad as the theft was the hotel management response. I filed a report with the hotel security and the sheriff and was told management would follow up with me, and they didn't. I had to ask at the hotel desk twice and call twice after returning home in order to talk to the "appropriate" manager. After telling me the investigation was ongoing and they couldn't tell me anything else, they now say the issue is closed from their perspective since they say no one besides me used a key card in the front door. The manager I talked to on the phone was disrespectful and tried to imply that I was lying or stupid. And I am not the only one this has happened to (either the theft or the poor management response) ... other people have written similar reviews on-line and other people had things stolen the same night I did. Still, the hotel chooses not to do anything.

As far as the hotel goes, the 3 outdoor pools are very nice though the rooms are not so well kept up (more like a lower-end hotel). They have an ice cream shop, outdoor pool bar, etc. Before the theft, I would have thought it was a nice place to stay with a family (since kids don't care about grungy caulk) but now I wonder, what are you supposed to do with your room key and all your belongings while you swim?? And what if you have a problem, how would you ever get someone to respond appropriately?

Beautiful open areas between the buildings with pools, cabana bar, lagoons, and fountains. The spread out buildings were great for controlling noise from other guest. We never heard anyone and the parking lot was full. Hotel was very clean, staff was friendly, I was a little nervous after looking at some of the reviews. But the hard wood floors were wonderful for allergies, beautiful lobby, convenient shuttles to Sea World and Universal were wonderful. It is also in the middle of International drive right by an on ramp to I-4 no fuss to get around. Lots of restaurants nearby. The only negative was that the rooms were a little small, but just fine for going to the parks and heading back to the room.

I stayed at the Wyndham Orlando Resort and on May 17, 2008, are room was burglarized. We had a room close to the pool on the ground floor. Two of us left the room to go out and the other three left later. Someone was watching us to know we all were gone. A personal laptop, 2 digital cameras, credit cards, money, clothes, and several more valuables were stolen. They took one of my friends suitcase we think to haul everything out of the room. The hotel security guard did not want to notify outside law enforcement, but we did. The night manager was alerted and took approximately 45 minutes to get to our room. He said they were really busy at the front desk. I spoke with the hotel manager and he said it would be turned over to the hotel's insurance agency. I found out later he did not turn it over to the insurance agency. He did not turn it in because he said the insurance company wouldn't do a thing. Management was horrible. I cannot stress enough that you do not want to stay at this hotel and become another victim. It ruined the trip we so long awaited for. There are things you read on Trip Advisor that you can overlook, but I am not joking about this matter. Please take the time to read the last reviews starting with March 2008. We all could have wrote the same review and just changed are screen name. Evidently, the hotel has done nothing to protect their guests. They are aware of the break ins and the hotel has neglected to install cameras in the hallways or outside of each building. It has got to be the same person who is doing this. I am writing this review so you will not become the next VICTIM. I care even if the Wyndham Orlando Resort doesn't.

PLEASE STAY AWAY!

Wyndham Orlando Resort - run away now. look elsewhere - HORRIBLE Experience

June 2008

For sure DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY and especially not your wife for heaven's sake.

This hotel was absolutely disgusting. The dirt and the smell were the worst things. The smell just knocks you over when you enter the room.

Reading the description and looking at the pictures on the hotel web page, you would think the hotel was not that bad. It's a complete fabrication. Even the hotel staff admitted as much.

Don't let any of the pictures fool you. Don't send your convention business there, don't send your employees there to stay.

The web site pictures did not represent the absolute horrible state this property is in.

Upon our arrival we were given a room out of the 1970s with cracks in the walls, a dirty room, and a dirty bathroom. Evidently, the hotel is from around 1978 and has NEVER been renovated.

When I asked to be moved to a newer room, we were given a smaller room in another part of the property just as old and just as disgusting.

Also, the hotel is located in a rundown part of the city.

If you want Internet access, there is NO wireless and they will charge for $10 for a network cable if you forget yours. You will have to plug into a phone to get a slow wired connection and even then, it will cost you around $10 a day for the privilege.

We could only stand two nights and had to check out to move to a better hotel. There are MUCH, MUCH better hotels nearby for the same or a bit more. You will get much more for your money elsewhere. You can move five miles away and have a much better experience. Look over near Sea World for better hotels. I would tell you the place we moved, but I am afraid they would think this review was biased or something to a particular chain.

Our room was clean. Bed was amazingly comfortable. Staff was very nice ... though our room was not ready when we checked in at 5:30pm (should have been ready at 4pm) ... but they did get us another room.

I am very likely to return to the Wyndham Orlando Resort.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.
