My expectations of the Viking Motel were somewhat reasonable due to the review I read about the motel and from the pictures I viewed online. Also not having visited Detroit before, I looked forward to a staying at place where I could feel safe and know full well that my belongings were not in any kind of risk of getting stolen or tampered with.
As I arrived I noticed the parking lot was not up to par with the pictures I viewed online. On top of that, there were some questionable characters coming in/out of the rooms, leading me to believe that there were people staying at the Viking Motel with other intentions than just "letting the Viking be there home during their visit to Detroit" -online review.
When I went to check-in, the man behind the counter, behind the glass, was not welcoming at all, and almost seemed frustrated or annoyed I even bothered him to check-in. But I thought to myself "I'm not gonna judge this place by these things."
So I proceeded to check-in, showing my identification etc. After that process the man behind the glass divider handed me a form to sign, stating I would not have sex with a minor, that I wouldn't view channel 10 (24hr porn channel) with a minor present, and that the Viking motel was not responsible for any of my possessions if they were to go missing.
When I got to my room I took note that there were stains on the walls, carpet and curtains. There was also rust and mold on the bathroom floor and inside the shower. It was not evident that it was cleaned often due to these things.
The Viking Motel in Detroit, Mich. was a really bad experience for me overall. I did not feel welcome or comfortable, nor did I feel safe to stay there.
I ended up checking-out the day I checked-in and stayed at a much more respectable and looked after motel closer to downtown.
My advice would be to not stay at the Viking Motel during your visit Detroit, regardless of how "cheap" the rates are per night. Each local Detroit person that knew I was gonna be residing there for the weekend advised me not to stay there.
I will advise the same thing for those of you that are looking for a "cheap" place to stay during your visit to Detroit. Spend a few more dollars at a different motel and feel safe. Because you will not find that at the Viking Motel in Detroit, Mich.
