Excellent
32 year old with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure

If you are a kite surfer, want to learn to kite surf or just want to relax and watch kite surfing, the Agualina hotel in Caberete is the place to stay. The construction seems fairly newly and as a result the rooms are clean. The rooms are set up like mini-apartments with the majority of the rooms having kitchenettes and balconies. The showers have liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner dispensers.

There are guests at Agualina who come every weekend and create a warm atmosphere and community culture. Each room has television with cable, there is free internet with a computer in the lobby of the hotel and free wifi internet that is accessible if your room is close to the lobby. Each room has an air-conditioner but it is hard to get the room very cold. The beach is right outside your door and the kite surfing school (run by Audrey) is on the edge of the property, which is great since you are at the whim of the wind and may have to take a break during lessons if the wind is too rough or too faint.

The beach bar/restaurant has a simple menu (eggs for breakfast, pasta and chicken sandwiches for lunch) and will let you run a tab, which is great when you need a quick bottle of water to hydrate. They also use the fresh fruit of the day to make shakes, which are very refreshing. The Italian restaurant/bar at the front of the property is run by a husband and wife team (he’s Italian and she is Dominican) who pride themselves on getting fresh produce: listen to them when they tell you the specials as he knows how to shop for delicacies. They will deliver your breakfast, lunch or dinner poolside or to your room. The sushi restaurant in the front of the property will also deliver to your room.

Aqualina is a short “moto-concho” ride into town ($1) and about 25 minutes from the Puerto Plata airport. You can also walk down the beach into town. The security staff is friendly, helpful, and clearly know who belongs and does not and the ground’s staff keep a very well manicured lawn and garden. The pool is small and between 5 feet & 8 feet deep (not good for small children) but refreshing and clean and there are approximately 7 plastic chaise lounges to use. There are no beach towels provided by the hotel so bring your own and there is no sundry shop, but the front desk will go to the store and get you whatever you need if you don’t feel like going yourself. The prices are very reasonable and because of an Internet rate came out to be less than $100 per night.
