First impressions aren't always correct. While at first it seems like a lovely place to stay for a weekend getaway, it turns into a nightmare. We spent the first night up all night listening to the sounds of a party in the condos above the...
One word sums up our experience at this hotel-"dreadful". The room was dreary, drab and dirty. The walls must have been made of onion skin paper as we were able to hear everything that took place outside our room and much of what went on...
I had heard from so many people how nice this place was but let me tell you it was not. There was mold growing on the walls in the bathroom which made me ill. I had to be at the hospital for my husband's surgery the next day with my head...

I have been wanting to stay here since the first time I saw it. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed.
The good: rooms are huge, great kitchen, good beds.
The not-so-good: if you have a room with a "lake view" you're actually on the street side. This means you've across the street from the Green Mill restaurant (and bar) which can get a little loud and rowdy at night. Parking is across the street and on busy nights restaurant customers park in their lot. Even though there are signs threatening towing the hotel does not tow. We spent 20 minutes trying to find a place to park for the night. I asked the front desk people and they said "security people are out taking license numbers and will be having people towed". Then I ran into a security guy who said the front desk people never let them call for tows because they don't want to deal with the whining, illegal parkers.
So hotel customers have to wait and wait and wait for a parking spot while the hotel front desk people won't stick up for their customers and two these morons.

The front desk was more than willing to show us different rooms to find "the one" we wanted.
Their beautifully designed, spacious suites offer hot tubs, a fireplace, a full kitchen with a real coffee pot, a full dining area and a living area. This particular room, 1201, was rather noisy in the morning, as it was near the exit to the elevators, but its one of the best rooms in the house for spaciousness and four person hot tub.
The hotel also needs to upgrade the VCR to a DVD, no one has video tapes anymore. I would recommend to all for any extended stay!

We love the location and that we can walk to so many attractions and restaurants in the area. We stay here every time we visit the Duluth area. Our daughter loves the pool area and we love that the pool area is always clean, the water is warm, and it has never been too crowded or rowdy. We love the architectural interest of the building and the fact that every room is a suite with a full-size refrigerator, microwave, etc.
Being only a few minutes from the lift bridge and watching the massive boats come through is fun.
I am very likely
to return to the The Suites Hotel in Canal Park.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.

It had dated furniture, inadequate lighting, no overhead lighting, only small lamps on tables. We had an inaccurate bill. The manager was good about correcting this on check in, but then I had to debate the bill with the desk person at check out. The advertised happy hour did not happen and the bill for the restaurant was refunded at a later date. It was not a great first experience with the Hawthorne Suites hotel for us.
