I have been an occasional Royal client for over thirty years. Modernization was difficult but it happened, so the Royal hotel is retaining its name and reputation in the new century.
I am somewhat likely
to return to the The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort.
I might recommend it to friends.

My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon. We had a fabulous time. The hotel staff is great, the views are terrific and the tiki bar is awesome. The concierge was knowledgeable and friendly and he helped us plan parts of our stay. We plan to go back someday and stay here again.
The room was cleaned every day. We were welcomed with champagne and our every request was attended to in a timely manner.
I am very likely
to return to the The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.

The Sheraton hotels are always convenient for my stays and provide an excellent membership program. Their beds are also excellent for the business traveler.

They did not have our reserved room. They gave us a higher priced room instead but charged us more for it. Since it was their fault, we should not have paid more. Everything else was terrific!
We had a quick and easy check in. I liked the courteous staff.

Mediocre
I always wanted to stay at this hotel. I have to admit I never would again. The rooms are old and not in good shape. I did not like the fact that the pool closed so early, and that they kicked you off of the beach at 6:00. I feel that there are...

The Royal Hawaiian has pretty external architecture and a long history, but is not what I would call a luxury hotel.
My wife and I stayed in summer 2006; we chose the Royal Hawaiian because it sometimes called the best hotel on Waikiki Beach. At about $300 per night for its lowest class of room (Garden View Room) and up to $700 for a good beach view, it certainly prices itself at the top end of the market. Thing is, it doesn't earn the price. The Garden View is rarely in fact the view of any garden. It is rather a view of the roof of the hotel. Noise is also a problem. The hotel is permeable to noise, and the hotel management allows very loud events as early as 8:00 am to wake you up on a Saturday morning.
The hotel does have a nice outdoor bar and a strong beach location (the Moana Surfrider, also managed by Starwood, is better), and the hardwood paneling and such gives it a rich air. But this can't make up for the awful specifics that destroy any romantic ambience you want to catch. The wallpaper in our room was peeling off the walls. The roof view included several cigarette butts sitting outside the window that someone had apparently thrown from a higher story. The bathroom tile was mildewed and dangerously cracked. The window paint was peeling and the screen completely filthy. The television was a tiny 18 thing and the furniture was deeply scratched and marked, as if it had come from a thrift store. Ive stayed at better , much better, Super 8s.
We asked the hotel manager to move us to a different room, but the only one was available, was about as bad and, in addition, was suffused with a strong chemical odor, which I later learned was a product used to cover up the smell of cigarette smoke. At that date, it was too late to find a new hotel and we stayed unhappily on.
My brother-in-law came to Waikiki while we were staying at the Royal Hawaiian and he stayed at the Marriott there. His room, besides being slightly less expensive than ours, was infinitely better. It was clean, had a view of the beach, and extremely quiet. The Royal Hawaiian compared so unfavorably to the Marriott room that we almost asked to sleep on his floor.
In short, I strongly recommend staying away from this hotel. It is a long way away from living up to its reputation or exorbitant price.

Excellent
The Royal Hawaiian is a beautiful, older but aging well hotel with gracious, welcoming staff. Our room was spacious with handsome wallpaper and a sumptuous bed. Walk out hotel back doors to Waiikii beach. First class hotel. Would absolutely...

We love this hotel and its great staff. Everything exudes a charm and quality of a bygone era. My family and I have been staying at "The Royal" for over 60 years. My grandparents honeymooned here and we've been staying ever since.
Every room includes wonderful touches like awesome chocolate mint coins on the pillows every night (we bring lots home), fresh-baked banana bread upon arrival.
The staff truly tries to treat you like a friend, rather than a number. If you get to know them and treat them like friends, you'll find it hard to leave at the end of your stay. Caveat: if you want to be impersonal, cold, or easily upset, this is not the hotel for you. Tipping can get expensive at the Royal, but you get what you pay for.
Be sure to have the buffet at least once, and if you're there on a Sunday, all the better. Their Luau attracts guests from lots of other hotels. I think it's one of the best. Enjoy the free show from the lobby even without paying, if you want.
