A number of years ago I worked for a start-up cable television network that had offices in The New Yorker Hotel. It's a wonderful physical design. The sort of "wedding cake" architecture for which the most beautiful New York buildings are known. Our...

Location.Everything it's a real dump.“I could not believe that a hotel in mid town Manhattan could still be around in this poor of a condition. It has not been updated since the 60's or older. The rooms were tiny (when I say tiny I mean tiny- 3 feet ...

As noted by other reviewers, it is convenient to Penn Station/MSG, but the rooms are very scary. Old furniture & dirty walls abound. Our group had 4 rooms of varying size - all small! Bellman/Doorman service is poor, Front Desk was OK, Maid...

I just got back from my stay at the New Yorker. I will summarize my thoughts in the following bullet points for easy reading:

Good Points:

> The hotel is in a superb location. It’s within walking distance from most major sites

> The view from the breakfast room is fantastic, the floor 39 overlooks the financial district & the Empire State Building). Breakfast is all-you-can eat and is very nice with friendly service.

> The food in the hotel restaurant (not the 24hr Tik Tok Diner) is excellent, with friendly service. I recommend the Fillet Mignon!

Bad Points:

> Hotel is under-equipped for its size. There are constant lines at reception and the guests waiting around make the whole entrance lobby look like a shambles

> The rooms/corridors are in major need of refurbishment. Wallpaper patches, stained/damaged decor, and the badly stained carpets all look bad. Apparently refurbishment is underway, but I saw no sign of this, and no finish date is apparent.

> The hotel sells itself on views. Due to the bizarre shape of the building, many of the views look directly across at other rooms, so they no have view at all. Be wary of this.

> Poorly fitted air conditioning units (rammed in the open window space and taped up) mean zero noise insulation! If you need a quiet place to sleep, then look elsewhere, or buy some good ear plugs.

> The space under each door means you can hear the corridor action perfectly too, another sound problem

> The hotel lobby can only change $100 in traveler’s checks (per room) each day (use Macy's to change an unlimited amount with a 1% charge)

> The suites are basically two rooms knocked into one, so have a bathroom at each side. It’s good for couples, but our bathroom would have had that view we desperately wanted if it had a west-facing window!

> Dig around in the room and you will find lots of dirt. I had rubbish underneath my bathroom sink that had been there for weeks. The cupboard shelves, etc., are also very dusty.

Overall, this is an okay hotel, but there are many issues that need resolving. The hotel has the potential to be one of the best in the city, but as you can see there are too many things letting it down.

It’s in a good location for those requiring a simple base to sleep.

I mostly felt trendy because of the design and decor of the entry. I love the revolving doors and the grandeur of the public areas.
