40 year old woman with a moderate budget, traveling for business

The design of the hotel is really fantastic. They have made a beautiful and interesting hotel out of what was a tough old jail. My 78 year old mother loved it. It's very centrally located - we walked everywhere. If, like me, you are bored to tears of staying in bland corporate hotels, this hotel is for you.

I stayed once but won't again. Pretentious pseudo-classy hotel insults the fine architecture of the old jail. The chrome awning over the front door clashes horribly with the stone structure. Interior is self-consciously modern in the usual tasteless, bizarre and jarring way. At night when I checked in, the music throughout the hotel was what one would expect in some tawdry late night dance club. Ditto when I visited a guest a few weeks later. Rooms are OK and offer the only respite from the relentless and insufferable music piped throughout the rest of the place. A blown chance to make a truly fine hotel out of an impressive historic structure.

I stayed at the Liberty Hotel during Thanksgiving. My room had a terrific view of the Charles River. Everyone the doorman, bellman and front desk clerk - they were all very professional, positive and accommodating. I will definitely stay again.

44 year old man with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure

My husband and I went for a weekend away in Boston and found this really cool hotel that used to be a jail. The lobby was definitely a wow when you first walk in to this huge rotunda. The service was excellent and the lobby bar is a lot of fun at night and apparently the place to be. We had breakfast in their restaurant Clink and had the best eggs Benedict we've ever had. The hotel is located in Beacon Hill which has a lot of shopping and cafe's down Charles Street. We would absolutely stay there again. The rooms are quite spacious and have all the amenities you need when traveling.

The Liberty is a new hotel (August 2007) built around the Old Charles Street Jail in Boston. The use of the Jail theme is creative and makes for an interesting motif.

The location is across from the MGH station which is nice although that means the hotel is next to MGH (Mass General Hospital). There was always some activity outside but the sounds never made it into the room. Not really a bother to me but I can see it potentially as an issue to others.

The service from the doorman, bell staff, and bar service was exceptional. Front desk staff was acceptable. Restaurant service was inconsistent the two times I dined. Only one restaurant was open at the time I visited.

The room was clean and crisp albeit smaller than expected. Bed was a little firm given it was brand new but comfortable none the less. There is a minibar, flat panel, and a coffee maker for amenities.

The Bathroom was big enough but the shower was small. There is not enough room to bend over to wash your feet without hitting your head on the knob or wall. Lighting was acceptable. Tub looked adequate for one person though I did not use it.

Overall, it was a good experience and will stay near the top of the list of hotels to consider when I visit Boston again.
