Went for a girls' weekend--we had high expectations based on the website. Unfortunately, not as advertised. Room was spacious, comfortable enough, and clean, but nowhere as nice as pictured. The A/C and fan were noisy, though not unbearable. The bedding, floors, etc., were updated, but the furniture was old and repainted--didn't quite pull together. We had reserved for three, but the room was only set up for two. When I called the front desk, I was put on hold and after a long wait, I finally gave up on talking to anyone. We spoke to someone at the front desk on Sat. and the room set up was corrected. We did enjoy the pool and appreciated the substitute desk person bringing our drinks instead of making us wait (Only one person working both the front desk and the "bar.") Maybe these things seem minor, but our main complaints involve the room amenities and the so-called continental breakfast. In the room you'll find a pencil, note pad, and bottled water, all with the hotel logo, yet you are given cheap hotel packages of Breck shampoo and Dial Soap. For the price and the hype, these should be upgraded. Why not have better brand hotel labeled items, maybe even some homemade soap (there are locally made soaps in town)? Also get rid of the cheap plastic cups and ice bucket. Folger's coffee is ok, but why not a nice Columbian? Plus, pay attention to how many people will be in the room and be set up for that number. Second, the continental breakfast was a joke. We found a plate of minature muffins (one kind only), some napkins, plastic packaged cereal bowls, and a sign that said juice and milk upon request. Ridiculous! I've been to many less expensive motels with far better spreads.
At least add some fruit, a bigger selection of pastries, and an urn of decent coffee with real cream, etc. The only coffee in the lobby was lattes and such that you had to purchase. My biggest disappointment was that I had made a reservation weeks in advance for one of the great summer spa packages and when I got to the spa Sunday morning, I found that I had been scheduled incorrectly and wasn't able to get the services I planned on. I ended up getting a massage only (Kristen is a sweetheart, by the way). The owner discounted the massage as a way to make up the problem, which I appreciated, and offered to work me in later for the other services, but some things just can't be made right. In all, I would give the spa another chance if I ever went back to Castroville, but I'd probably look for a B & B and not stay at the hotel again.
