I recently returned from a weekend in Chicago, where I stayed at the Swissotel for an off-season, excellent special price. I'm extremely frugal, but since the price was SO good I spent a little more and upgraded to a 17th-floor corner room with a continuous view up and down the Chicago River -- from the Tribune Tower to Navy Pier -- and it was worth the extra $20.00 to take in the grandeur of this classic city.
I liked the room for many reasons beyond and including the views -- top among them the distance of the excellent bathroom from the sleeping area (which afforded great privacy and noise reduction while my partner was sleeping and I was getting ready) and for the exceptional bedding on the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. The king-sized bed with immaculately clean and pressed bed linen, a true pillow-topped mattress with a lush down(?) duvet/comforter, silky sheets and four long billowy-but-somehow-perfectly-firm pillows made it feel like we were were sleeping in a cloud. Combine this body comfort with the muted glow of city lights, and I'll leave it to you to imagine how amorous a night could be. Great for romance.
The building itself is very skyscraperish, minimalist in decor, colors and lines, but that modernist feel is softened in the room with the smart furniture and the heavenly bed.
Given the value and the special off-season pricing I was fortunate to take advantage of (all toll, about $250.00 with the special corner room + fees, taxes and valet parking), I'd recommend this hotel. I'd urge it as a place to stay just on the merits of the bed alone(!) but the views, the location, and other qualities make it a great choice too.
