It was August in Iowa, so quite warm and humid as is usual. The air conditioning unit in the hotel rooms did not condition the air, but only made it cooler. Thus, the tiles in the bathroom were slippery due to condensation. The beds had those awful foam-core blankets that work great when it is cold, but don't allow the passage of air so no one slept well due to sweaty conditions. Also, the light by the mirror only worked if there was no one in the shower. The shower changed temperature and lost pressure if someone used the sink to wash hands or brush teeth. The games in the pool area included a pool table that had no pool balls in it, and nothing to tell the guests that it was out of order. Finally, the pool climate control was not working, so the guests had to rely on solar heat, which made for a brisk swim, even in the summer, to warm the pool. It was bearable for everyone for about an hour a day, which made that hour really crowded. We were there for three nights for a family event, and the only virtues of the hotel were that the staff was efficient and friendly and the linens were clean.
This hotel made me feel welcome: The staff was very friendly, went out of their way to make our whole family feel welcome and passed on our messages to other family members without fail. They even suggested a couple of good restaurants in the area and got us reduced-price admissions for the kids to go to the movies. Very personable and friendly staff at the desk, and housekeeping staff that worked around our events.
