I stayed two nights at Socorro's Motel 6 in January 07', and found my room, and especially the bathroom to be clean, and everything else was at least adequate.
My room, on the "sunny" south side (a good choice in winter) also had a new TV with decent cable service. My first night was blissfully quiet, the second night I had loud, rude guests above me, partying until 2 am! As at all motels, you get just about all kinds of people. Unfortunately, your stay depends more on the respect for others of your neighbors, than on the room itself.
There’s a mini-laundry for those that need it. The soda machines were still there from previous visits, but the snack machines were gone. There’s coffee in he morning at the office. There is a 7/11 across the street, however. It’s not convenient (walking distance) to any restaurants. Try the El Camino Restaurant, for both American and "New" Mexican food. It’s a clean, "family type" restaurant. It’s also inexpensive (entrees under $10), but very good food.
The Motel 6, at the south end of Socorro's main street, offers immediate on-off from I-25, and is the best for birders going to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, 19 miles south. (i.e. there are many cars leaving before dawn, to catch the sunrise.) It’s especially nice for the birders, checkout isn't until 12 noon, so you have time to take in the birds, and enjoy breakfast, before you must check out.
