Southern Mansion - Page 1

This was our second visit to the Southern Mansion, and my score reflects a comparison to our first visit. This time we stayed in room #5, a beautiful mustard colored room decorated with antique furniture and tapestry. It featured a small bathroom with commode and a large walk-in shower. The sink was located in the bedroom in an outcove. The room was spotlessly clean, with a hint of fresh lemon scent. On check-in, we had expected to be informed of the time for high tea, but were disappointed to find it had been discontinued. On our prior visit, high tea was one of the highlights of our stay, which featured tea, wine, pastry, and fresh vegtables with a creamy dip. Our breakfast the next morning featured a crab omlet (yes, crab!) and a spinach omlet both served with deliciously thick bacon. My wife reported the crab omlet to be the most fantastic omlet she's ever eaten. We departed happy, but a bit disappointed in the missing high tea. Of course, new visitors would never know of this pleasant event. If you think you'd like to stay in a historic, opulent Cape May mansion, this is the one. It's centrally located and within a 10 minute walk to the quaint Washington Mall shopping district.

The Southern Mansion could actually be considered a small hotel. Our room, #15 had a private entrance, as do many, and we never actually used the front entrance except for our check-in. The afternoon tea featured a creamy smooth and unique egg spread along with crackers, and a variety of fresh, raw vegetables for dipping. There were an assortment of cookies, and along with the tea, wine was also served. Our room was wonderful and was filled with antiques, and decorative artwork. The bath featured an enormous glass walled shower, high ceiling, and again was tastefully decorated. Following our dinner and some evening shopping, we arrived home to find the bed turned down for us, and the antique bed spread folded and stored for the evening. We had a pleasant evening without noise or commotion. Breakfast the following morning was 4 star quality, and we enjoyed chatting with our server, a college student from Russia and compared our cultures and home towns. All in all, a great visit to Cape May, and the best B&B we've stayed at from our visits along the northeast coast.
