The Shoreline, although far from a resort, was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated fittingly for Michigan's U.P. However, the picture on their site is somewhat misleading in that it seems the motel is directly on the beach, with each door opening onto sand. The property is on the beach but the building is actually perpendicular to it.
Being in the second room from the beach, we had people constantly walking past our window and door which had to be open due to lack of air conditioning. It was not peaceful until just before sunset. We arrived for late check-in at 4 pm and the office/restaurant was closed, and also at check-out when they supposedly are serving breakfast. There was an envelope tacked outside with our name and room keys inside. Therefore, there was no staff should we have needed anything. There was a phone number to call, but there was no phone in our room and cell reception in the U.P. is sketchy at best.
The town is extremely small with no food store or gas stations, so we were disappointed that the motel had no ice or beverage machines. Our room did have a coffee machine and supplies and the bathroom was well supplied, but only had a shower stall and no tub. There was cable, but the TV wasn't the best and the channel list was wrong. We ate at the only pub/restaurant open in town and the food was excellent, but very pricy for the location and establishment. We also enjoyed a monk-run place that was just a bit out of town called The Jampot that had fabulous baked goods and jam that we bought for dessert before we went to dinner. We will go back to the area just to visit the Jampot again.
We woke to another envelope on our door with our (pre-paid) receipt in it which we left our keys in. It was very odd never having contact with the owner or an employee once during our days stay. That may be normal for the U.P. or small towns but it was still strange. Overall, these were minor inconveniences, but there were enough of them that we will probably not return to the Shoreline.
