First of all, ignore any review with people complaining about price. Hawaii is expensive and the people complaining about price should just go to their local lake/river and skip Hawaii altogether. Obviously, Hawaii is out of their reach.
Anyway, I got married at the Sheraton in October 2007 and am returning this October. The personnel are very friendly resort-wide. From the concierge, to wait staff and beach workers everyone goes out of their way and makes you feel like a King. Also, check in usually takes less than 10 minutes.
The location on Kaanapali beach is prime. There is NO better location on the beach than the Sheraton. It sits right up against black rock for great snorkeling and the natural jeti provides excellent beach break. The water is relatively calm so it is great for kids. Because of this, there is no need for an elaborate pool like the Hyatt. The Hyatt beach is terrible, I stayed there in April 2007. The pool at the Sheraton is good enough for sitting at the bar, getting lit up and taking a sobering dip.
The rooms at the Sheraton are clean, well maintained and big enough to accomodate several people. The service is excellent and the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are not lined in marble and gold and have electronic gadgets at every nook. If you are in Hawaii and spend any more time in your room to sleep and change clothes you have chosen a poor place for vacation.
Food/Restaurant- The food is good, yet the restaurant is limited. Great news though, Whaler's Village is a five minute walk on the beach.
All in all the Sheraton is by far the best choice on Kaanapali. I have stayed at three other hotels on the beach and have made the Sheraton my number on spot.
