The front desk staff was friendly and helpful.

The room was small but clean.

The managing staff was unprofessional to say the least.

My family (husband & kids) witness a hotel employee named MONA belittle an apparent insubordinate (a housekeeper). Mona spewed insults and many profanities; she seemed to have a fondness for the word that starts with the letter f . I was was saddened to hear the housekeeper spoken to in such a matter. No one deserves to be treated or referred to as trash.

This incident was uncomfortable and unnecessary.

I did try to contact the General Manager but they were not in at the time.

The Gunter is in a great location within walking distance of lots of attractions downtown. This was our first stay here and I was nervous because I booked it online and because it was one of the least expensive for the area we wanted to stay in. Once we booked the special rate, we were not allowed a refund if we cancelled (that's the deal if you take the internet special). However, we were pleasantly surprised. The valet service was speedy and helpful. They let us park our car on the side while we checked in since we were leaving again in 30 minutes. Check-in was a breeze, as was check out. I booked a queen and was surprised to walk in and find they had given us a king and had provided extra pillows (my online request). The room is not huge but isn't tiny, either. The beds are a dream to sleep on! My only complaint was the bathroom. The vanity area is nice but the toilet and shower area are small and the tubs are dinky and old. The towels are also pretty cheap. And, the closet is tiny, but I had no need to use it. I could manage for the price and the amount of time we were staying. My husband says he liked everything. I also read reviews before going that it was loud. There is road noise and noise from late night partiers outside on the street, but that's downtown for you. Doors slamming inside were loud and you could hear people in the halls but I didnt hear people in other rooms. We plan to go back and stay here with our son. Overall, if you have more than two or three people or are staying more than a few nights, you might want a more expensive hotel with a larger room. On our budget, we felt pretty pampered and liked that we were able to stay downtown. I also heard you shouldn't stay in room 636. Spooky! We'll definitely be back!

The lobby was inviting upon arrival for my annual sisters' vacation. We were also somewhat pleased with our room (although the view outside was a flat roof with air condition units). The bathroom really needed updated and the shower head was installed too low for my shortest sister who is 5'2". We settled in although the room was somewhat warm. The second night we were awakened by a drip, drip, drip. Water was streaming from our air conditioner. Calling the front desk after a sleepless night, they sent someone right up. They blew out the lines which were stopped up and said engineers would check it. The restaurant also gave us complimentary breakfast buffet tickets (which we used but didn't like the cold food on breakfast bar). That night we returned and had no messages from front desk. We thought it odd that they did not follow up on our two miserable nights but settled in for a very comfortable night in a cool room. The next day we awoke rested and set out for a day in the Hill Country. Night number four, we went to bed early from our day outing. About eleven o'clock we awoke again to drip, drip, drip. This time there was a large puddle in the floor. We were moved at 12:30 in the morning to a handicapped room with one king-sized bed and a roll-away. Night number three no sleep. We were finally moved the following afternoon to our third room at the hotel's convenience. For our ruined vacation they paid for two nights parking (a whopping 44 dollars). Oh yes, they credited us for a movie charged to our room that we didn't watch. I wonder if someone else watched the movied while they drank our Dr. Pepper's and ate out Hot Tamales that were missing from out snack sack?!? Were the people nice? Yes, but they just paid you lip service. I'd say a 3 is a high rating for what we got! Oh yes, pictures are much prettier on line than on sight (especially the pool) Internet service didn't work either.

It is in an excellent location in San Antonio, convenient to the River Walk and restaurants. It is an historic building that has been restored into a fine and comfortable hotel.
