Located in the historic Murray Hill district, this hotel is a calm retreat. Times Square, Grand Central Station and the Empire State Building are all within easy reach on foot. Decorated in a European style, the rooms are comfortable and well equipped, with mini kitchenettes that are great for making yourself something quick to eat. There are also many restaurants a minutes from the hotel. There are great views of the Manhattan skyline from its rooftop garden which is a lovely place to relax, and the Rare Bar & Grill serves some nice food, with the speciality being a twist on the American favourite, the hamburger! The staff are friendly, polite and always helpful - really great! There are good transport links a short walk from the hotel, so all of New York is easily acessible.

Traditional European style, modern facilities and convenient midtown location. A hotel since the 1920s, the Shelburne was redone in 1999. A gracious lobby with Oriental carpets, teardrop chandeliers and a fireplace sets the scene for a hotel with old-world ambience and a friendly staff. The hotel attracts guests from the worlds or fashion, banking and finance; visitors to the U.N.; and leisure travelers. Valet parking and the services of a concierge are among the amenities. The Penthouse roof garden of the Shelburne is a dramatic setting for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in summer, with the bright lights of the Chrysler Building and other city skyscrapers twinkling all around. It can be reserved as a very special site for receptions or banquets.

Despite booking a month in advance, we were put in an unrenovated room and the condition of our one-bedroom suite was appalling. The furniture was broken, torn and threadbare. The carpet was dingy and the curtains were filthy. The windows were not...
