I've stayed at a lot of hotels, averaging 20 or more nights a year. I have stayed in accomodations ranging from $30 a night to $300+. I'm not a hotel snob, if the place is clean, I can sleep anywhere for a night. BUT. This motel is by far the NASTIEST place I've ever had the misfortune to stay.
On June 1, 2008, we were traveling back to St. Louis from Niagara Falls with my daughter, sister and 83 year old mother. Since I have visited Saugatuck in the past and love the town, it was the perfect stop on the trip home.
We stayed at the Shangrai-La Hotel on Blue Star Highway. My sister, who was unfamiliar with the area made the reservations that were non-refundable. We expected a quaint, circa 1950s hotel. That isn't exactly what we ended up with.
The room my daughter and I shared was filthy. So much so that my daughter (who is a doctor) went about documenting things with photos and video. The ac, the window sills, the shower, the mildew and mold on the wall in the bathroom behind the toilet, the mold in the refrigerator, ad nauseum. We checked the beds before retiring, hovered over the toilet and refused to step into the shower. Had it not been late, had my 83 year old mother not been exhausted, there is NO WAY we would have spent the night there.
Tuesday morning after returning home, I noticed a group of bumps on my arm. About 12 of them, and each day the area became worse, red, angry, swollen. Nothing I tried on the area helped. After consultation with a close friend who is head of infection control at a major St. Louis hospital and a trip to the ER, consensus is that these *bumps* are bedbug bites and I am on antibiotics and a cortisone ointment for treatment.
At ANY PRICE per night, there is NO way I would recommend this place. I am in the process of attempting to get a full refund for our stay and have contacted the Allegan county department of health (who apparently do not inspect hotels) and have contacted the township of Saugatuck AND its building inspector. IF someone in a position of *authority* doesn't take steps to clean this joint up, I'm going to the local newspapers as well.
I think it is very bad business for the wonderful village of Saugatuck to promote this motel. (yes we did come up with the accomodations by checking Saugatuck lodging listings) Obviously the health department doesn't inspect hotels, but I believe it is imperative that someone in some official capacity make a trip to the Shangri-La very soon.
I have pictures to both document the conditions in the room and the bites on my arm. I would hope that the township take action soon on this problem.
Sleep in your car, you're better off!
