To start it is in a local neighborhood off the beaten tourist track, where honest people live. They've cleaned up the drug problem years ago, and my wife and I never felt insecure when we took a stroll down the street for 10 minutes. In fact the people are very friendly and even wave to you while your walking or driving down the street. Hawaii is a certain state of mind place. If YOU don't act all up tight and "TOURISTY", THEY don't react to you in a negative fashion. Just respect their land and customs and you have a great time. Anyway, back to the hotel.
When we arrived one of the kind hotel employees physically walked out and showed us the parking space for our stay. She then helped us with some of our luggage down a long stairway to our room. How many small corporate-run hotels would even do that? When we got inside our room we realized we were upgraded and they didn't charge extra for it! They told us we were getting a plain-jane room for the minimum charge back when I booked it. The room had some shortfalls like some localized ants and an occasional Gecko on the wall, if the ladies aren't into cute little reptiles. This is what lives in a tropical zone, so expect it.
The extra kickers that are given to the customers are outstanding. Every morning there is a Continental breakfast out on the main lanai. This includes-different coffees, teas, juices, milk, waffles,bagels,cottage-cheese,scrambled eggs and Portuguese sausage on certain days, and freshly-picked off the property's tree mangos, and pineapple. Load your plate full of food, sit down, and enjoy the slender of the spectacular view Hawaii has to offer. Every Wednesday evening come to the main lanai for a delicious meal and local entertainment. The time my wife and I were there we were fed- Tofu salad, steamed rice,stir-fried veggies sauted in sesame oil, Roast-beef that was very tender, bread, and homemade upside-down pineapple cake and coconut cake that was some of the best that I have ever tasted. Then, the local musicians played ukulele, and slide guitar, while singing old and new Hawaiian favorites. They even took requests and joked with the crowd. While the music is playing the employees bring around all the complimentary Mai-tais and beer you can drink.
The other kickers include Wednesday Kayaking/Sandbar trip. And Saturday's 2 hour boat ride to snorkel the reef, and play volleyball at the sandbar. If you want family or alone-time, there is a nice pool with Jacuzzi down in the back of the property, as well as paddleboats and picnic tables to boot.
I'll end my long winded review by saying that the hotel and the owners are humble, and made mine and my wife's stay comfortable. But, then again it is nice to give back to the slowly departing local business community anywhere. See what the REST of Oahu has to offer, get off the expensive Waikiki tourist trail, use common-sense, and you'll find lots of fun in other parts of this awesome island. Enjoy, and Aloha! 10/21/2007
