Ok, I read reviews from February 07 saying the hotel was under renovation and air conditioning wasn't working. Just got back from 2 night stay 6/18/08 to 6/20/08. Booked online through American Express. Free upgrade on availability.
We checked in and were given the upgrade. Room was a disaster!! Stains and burns all over carpet and air conditioning that was barely pumping. (it was 106 outside), and the room hadn't been cleaned. I went to the front desk, I was told they were having a problem with the air conditioning in that tower. After conferring with a manager, they said they were booked solid, but could move us the next day. I said I could NOT spend 1 night in that room - I couldn't breathe in there. The woman at the desk was very helpful (thanks Glory!) and went to speak with a manager a 2nd time. We were then told that a block of rooms just became available (they had been waiting for them to be cleaned). They were in the other tower. These rooms were a lot nicer - cold air blowing, but still warm. We were given comps for drinks, food and 2 for one show. We called housekeeping to ask for a fan - they didn't have any. Picked one up for 10.00 at the pharmacy on the strip and left it on all day and night - kept bathroom door closed and drapes closed. It helped and was a pleasure sleeping. I found the beds and pillows soft and comfortable. Loved the history of the place and the casino was not packed. Workers smiling and saying hello. Food at the buffet was okay, but better elsewhere. (But for 6.99 with a Club Sahara Card for dinner, it was worth it) The desserts were great!!
As for the hotel being under renovation - NOT! We were informed that the hotel was sold and that renovations are beginning in August of 08. I hope they keep the old theme and feel of the hotel.
For folks on a budget it's an ok place to stay - watch out for the broken air conditioning and don't expect the Mirage - after all, you are not paying Mirage prices.
Just another tip - after adding up what it would have cost us for the monorail and passage back and forth to the airport, we rented a car. For about 45.00 for the entire period and free parking at all the casinos, it was well worth it. We even took a side trip to the Hoover Dam. Cost of gas was about 30.00. Still less than the 4 of us would have spent on transportation.
