We found the nice web site for Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga and thought this would be a romantic getaway.
We called and made reservations. But when we arrived, we realized that the chunk of money that we devoted to this "resort" was actually going to be spent on a motel! We drove up to the office, and the word "Motel" stared us straight in the face from the large sign. We walked the grounds, searching for the "gardens" they advertised. No gardens, just a few plants in planters around the office and pool. So we tried the "natural" hot springs pool. The water may be naturally heated by a geo-thermal aquifer, but my eyes were stinging from chlorine when we got out! (Not so natural!)
So we went to our "European Inspired Lodgings" room. It was just a regular motel room. And very old and plain at that, no coffee maker, no iron, no internet, and no amenities. The walls were so thin that the noise from other guests kept us awake all night. The next day, we sought out their massage rooms, they were in a back alley and reminded us of a Tijuana brothel, so we passed on that experience.
This place is not a resort. This place is exactly what the sign on the front of their office says, the word they avoided including on their web page, it’s just an old Motel!
