The River Terrace is located on the outskirts of the city of Napa. You'll need to make a short drive to the downtown area in the evening to find restaurants and drive north to visit the wineries. This is not to say that it's poorly located. Downtown Napa is a bit sleepy, so staying within walking distance shouldn't be a high priority.
The quality of the rooms at the River Inn is 4 to 5 star. The beds and bedding are plush and comfortable. The rooms have mini-bar, coffee service (free) and you can request a refrigerator for your room (the mini-bar fridge is weight sensitive so you can't store additional items in it) at no extra charge.
Check in was very smooth (we had several couples with the same last name) and the front desk staff was helpful in suggesting local restaurants and volunteered to make a reservation for us (the restaurant was not yet open when we discussed the selection). Unfortunately, the staff did not follow-through and we had no reservation. Fortunately, the hotel was not fully booked and we were able to get a table on a walk-in basis.
The lobby bar has an excellent selection of wines which you can sip in front of a roaring fire on cool evenings or sit on the lovely patio overlooking the Napa River on warmer nights. The complimentary breakfast in the morning has a good combination of eggs, meat, cereal, and pastries. It was better than I had expected.
Room service was prompt and the food was warm, delicious and well presented.
