I have stayed here four times in the last seven years on business. The staff tends to be young student types so they are not the most motivated or knowledgeable about tourist attractions. I suggest you do your own prior research or seek professional guidance somewhere else. I have overheard numerous tourist types become agitated when the staff did not have a ready answer.
I like the River Street Inn because it is a very historic and old structure with the quirkiness that an old building brings. The rooms can be small and cramped or large with a balcony (river view). It's mostly the luck of the draw unless you make your reservations well in advance with a "request". The two restaurants and bar are convenient especially if a summer rain comes about.
The hotel is on River Street so you can walk up and down to your hearts desire. You can walk or ride three streets west to see the real Savannah and avoid most tourists if you like. Parking is an issue; but not insurmountable.
