This is a budget motel (about $54 per night) that I stayed in for seven nights during September 2006.
Check-in was quick and simple, but contrary to their advertised claim, they would not accept my American Express card.
The room was very basic, but clean. It was serviced everyday, but inconsistently, sometimes fresh towels and soap were left, sometimes they weren't. Vacuuming was undertaken everyday to a very high standard. The motel allows pets and this might account for a faint smell of urine in a corner of the room.
Amenities included two double beds, a modern 26-inch TV with good reception, a telephone (free local calls) and a small refrigerator. The latter was missing its thermostat control and consequently liquids froze solid overnight. There is no room safe.
The basin plug was broken and I left it out on the bench top everyday expecting the maid to report it, but it was never attended to and one day she even put the broken plug back into the basin. The blanket on one bed had large ink stains on it and the other bed had a blanket with two five inch rips in it, right in the middle of the bed, this damaged linen was never replaced during my stay. The management really needs to educate its staff to be aware of the need to report maintenance issues such as these.
The air conditioner was large, old, inefficient and noisy and it was a toss-up whether to leave it running overnight, whether to be cool, or have peace and quiet, but not both.
My room access card failed after day four and I had to have it re-validated. Whilst doing this, the receptionist said I had been lucky it had worked for so long, he said some guests' cards failed several times a day.
The hotel offers plenty of free parking. One day I asked for driving directions to the Phoenix downtown city area three miles away, but the young receptionist on duty was unable to give me any directions, which I found curious.
Some web sites advertise this hotel as offering an "airport shuttle" or a "free transfer" service. This is incorrect. I asked about booking a shuttle to the airport, but was told they could only order a taxi for me.
Overall, the hotel is very tired-looking even though some web sites report it as having been recently refurbished. It will meet your needs for a brief 1-2 day stay if price is a concern. The (mostly young female) staff was largely uninterested in the guests, often they could be found in the public area lounging in front of the TV.
The motel's location does not make it very suitable for those without a car. There are plenty of nearby restaurants within walking distance.
I would not choose to stay here again. If I had been made to feel more welcome I would have overlooked the other shortcomings. It costs nothing to be welcoming and attentive to guests but the Red Roof Inn on Camelback seems disinterested in this aspect of hotel management.
