50 year old with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

We stayed at this hotel on our return trip from Florida. Our daughter, who was traveling with us, wanted to stop and visit some college friends, so we decided at the last minute to stop for the weekend. So, the day before leaving Florida, we got online to research our options. However, due to the fact that there was a major concert in town that weekend, many of the Columbia hotels were either sold out, or very expensive. The Red Roof seemed like an "ok" choice for our stay. But when we arrived late Friday evening, and given a room, it appeared as though someone was occupying the room, or had occupied it. So we were given another room. Unfortunately, it was on the 2nd floor, which we did not want. We were traveling with our two small grandchildren (2 year old and a 5-month old). This meant lugging them and their necessities up a long flight of stairs and down a hallway. After doing so, we found the room quite dirty. There was only one chair at the table (instead of usual two) and it was stained with heaven knows what! The desk telephone had smudges, and dirt pooled in the headrest area. The bathroom had mold on the tiles and on the shower curtain. Inquiring if there were any "clean" rooms, we were told nothing else was available. We decided to stay, but were not happy. Then, getting ready to sleep, we pulled down the comforter only to find a bunch of dead black bugs all over the top of the blanket. We have no idea what they were, but there were a LOT of them. My husband instantly began to make phone calls to find another hotel, but was having no luck....at least not for anything under $200 for the night. So he left the motel to find someplace where we could get on our computer. After two hours of searching, still no luck for that evening, but we were able to find a rather pricey hotel for the following evening. So, unfortunately, we sadly had to spend the night. Of course, I refused to sleep, nor put any of the children down on those beds. So we removed all the linen except the bottom sheet, inspected it closely, put down a small blanket we had in our vehicle, and sat up against the headboard the entire evening with the babies in our laps....this is how we spent the entire evening! At dawn the next morning, we scooped up the bugs into a coffee cup, and took them down to the front desk. The clerk gasped, and said she didn't want to look at them! She also said that should could, perhaps, give us $25 off the room rate. Disgusted, we cancelled the remainder of our stay, and left. As expected, we were very tired having not slept, and also quite stiff from sitting up all night.

Upon my return, I sent an email to Red Roof, and got back a very canned response that said "we're sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations." I also sent a letter to the Red Roof headquarters, to the attention their President, but have not receieved any response.
