Ok lets get the good stuff out of the way.
The parking was free; lobby was clean; a casino shuttle exists, although we did not use it (our experience with the rest of the hotel led us to believe we could easily be stranded and just drove ourselves); the TV worked, not as much train noise as some other reviewers said, but perhaps the screaming of other guests made us less sensitive to it; not that hard to find if you print out a local street map first. Oh yeah, we didn't get mugged either, the drunken brawls and yelling and sex noise from the 5 rooms of college age guests slamming through the paper thin walls went on till 3 am made us lock the door. Because there is no staff at night, other than the handyman and the 8monthpregnant clerk, there was nothing to do except confront 15 - 20 drunk guys or call the cops. We just waited them out until they got so drunk they passed out.
Now for the real story. I booked a 3 night stay for a business trip combined with some museum going and casino visits. I previously stayed at the Marriott, a fine hotel, but figured that this hotel at $140 a night less would be worth the savings. Nope.
We both have excellent people skills, in fact my girlfriend is a career diplomat. That being said, I strongly suggest as little interaction with the staff except for the handyman as possible. It's a dour, unfriendly place to work, no doubt.
The first bad sign was when hotel bar closed like 3 hours early, no staff left on duty but the maintenance guy. We arrived about 9 pm and found that the sheets on bed had a crusty residue and the drawers in the dresser etc. still had detritus from previous occupants. The hotel is self-service everything. We got new sheets delivered to the room and made up the bed ourselves, the new sheets were dirty, too.
The next day, room was not cleaned even though we put the service sign out at 1 pm. When we returned at midnight, the night maintenance guy said the day staff just doesn't do their job, he has to go through the hallway picking up garbage and plates instead of his duties. He helped us by getting some sheets and towels not a set, but the best he could do which was appreciated from the basement. Plus the keys didn't work the woman at the desk deigned to halt her personal phone call long enough to say only "room number?" make the keys (I had to ask again for two even though the two of us were standing there) and hand them to me while on the phone again. At least she did her job that night.
But the next night when I came in, there was no one in the lobby for the 10 minutes it took me to unload the car. It is in the middle of a slum, (I had to point this out to my girlfriend, that suburban ghettos don't look as dangerous as urban ones, but are, nonetheless. anyone could have walked into the hotel and up to the room floors. Think about that before you stay here.
The next day when I told the front desk the response was like, "Well, did you call for service? We don't have anyone here after 12 noon to do that" as if I should have known. I said no there was a card hanging on the inside of the door that said "service please", so I put it on the outside. I figured 12 hours is enough time to make up a bed in a small hotel. I tried to get coffee packets brought up for the coffee maker (since we didn't get any). After 45 minutes and two more phone calls with no coffee packets (we actually got a delivery of a coffee pot which made two pots, but no coffee how stupid is that?) ,and after a near cold shower (it was 23 degrees out, but for New England, that's nothing the hot water temp was about 75 Fahrenheit and that's being kind) we went to the restaurant, which had closed 15 minutes earlier then scheduled, 2 minutes before we got there.
The manager refused to give us coffee, even though the full coffee pots we clearly visible from the door of the restaurant. She yelled at us for even trying to enter. "Don't you know a rope means do not cross, what's the matter with you?" When another employee timidly asked if she could get us a cup of coffee, the manager said she doesn't care "Do whatever you want, just don't bother me, I'm busy", she said. "All I know is that my boss told me to close and I'm closed", she said, and then proceeded to speak loudly about us in the third person as if we didn't exist.
My girlfriend is a diplomat and the legal council for a major UN humanitarian agency and so knows how to keep her cool, but this stretched her to the absolute limit." I'm closed, Dont' you get it? Why don't you just go to a gas station and get some coffee?"
It will be a cold day in Hades before I stay at this place again. If you are really strapped for cash, or just want to flop for the night, don't mind bodily fluids on the bed, have a carry permit and are willing to protect yourself, or are exhausted enough to sleep through a circus, it just might be OK. I'd rather sleep in the Jeep myself.
