48 year old with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

We were not very familiar with the Alexandria Bay area but, because we'd heard so much about the 1000 Islands, decided to take a few days to explore. We checked out dozens of web sites and selected the Pine Tree Point "Resort" as a place to spend three nights. Total mistake. Despite the really wonderful web site, this place should be classified as a dive. It's not the worst place I've ever stayed but, for $129/night, it was by far the worst value for the money. By the way, I travel a lot and often find myself having to make-do in places that are well off the beaten path. I'm VERY familiar with the simple and inexpensive things hotels can do to make their guests comfortable and welcome, and this place had none of those.

They say it's being renovated, but it really needs to be bulldozed. It's scary, dirty, creepy, dark, and really a waste of money. I'll also be complaining to the local Better Business Bureau because the difference in what's described on their web site and what's actually there rises almost to the point of fraud.

We spent one night ... The bed was uncomfortable, there was no hot water the morning after, the place was grubby, the towels were thin and musty, the bedspread had a weird smell, there was no remote for the TV, the furniture was old and torn, the lighting was particularly inadequate, and the heater was loud. In addition, the expected amenities (soap, shampoo, etc.) were either missing or nasty. One funny example was the in-room coffee -- instead of the usual pre-packaged gormet coffee you find in even low-end hotels these days, they provided a ziplock bag containing a pile of loose coffee and a single filter, to go along with a Mr. Coffee machine that was at least 10 years old. Nasty.

Anyway, do not believe the web site. if you can get a room for, say, $30/night, it might be worth holding your nose and going for it, otherwise, stay away.
