The good, the bad & the ugly – Posted Sep 01, 2006

Mediocre
55 year old with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure

We traveled to Fribourg for a conference in July 2006, and booked through a Fribourg tourist site. The NH Fribourg is supposedly one of the best hotels in the city. There must be better places to stay.

The rooms vary a great deal in size and comfort. We booked two rooms, and experienced three.

Room #1, for two 20-something girls: it was very large and spacious, with huge windows, which were a definite plus because we were in Fribourg during a heat wave (and the hotel did not have air conditioning or fans). The view was of countryside and very peaceful and quiet.

Room #2: A single that was extremely tiny. The room was as wide as a short twin bed. Because the room was so small, there was virtually no air circulation and it was impossible to sleep.

Room #3: A single (after I requested a change to a larger single). This single was spacious and faced the front of the hotel, overlooking a parking lot and Irish pub in front and a lovely park to the right. A construction site across the parking lot created horrible noise all day, but we were out a lot, right? At night, it was worse. There were people in the park until 5:00 a.m., talking, laughing, and yelling. There was bar noise as well. Whatever you do, do not accept a room on the front of the hotel.

The location: The hotel is very close to the train station and walking distance to the old section of Fribourg. Unfortunately, it is also next to a girlie bar. Our concierge in Bern, when he heard we were going on to Fribourg, said that was a nice town to spend an afternoon. We were in Fribourg for 2.5 days and there was plenty to do and see. We loved Fribourg and would like to return, but to a different hotel.
