unless you have TONS of cash and don't mind a filthy bathroom and tiny room with a great view.
My husband and I stayed here for the last 6 nights of our honeymoon. Even with a STEEP discount the hotel was an abomination. Beautiful from the outside? Very. FABULOUS view? Yes. But the room was horrible. It smelled, the bathroom smelled like piss, the shower drain was clogged the first half of the stay so we showered in inches of filthy water, the AC came on and off despite turning it off and was so loud we couldn't sleep.
Additionally, we made a few phone calls from the room, about 60 minutes worth over 6 nights. For calls to the continental u.s. we were charged upwards of $11 DOLLARS A MINUTE. NO WHERE in the room were these fees stated (and as we had just come from a LUXURY resort in Maui, we figured they wouldn't charge much different.)
The hotel ended up overdrafting my credit card for $2,500 (about $700 of phone charges plus charging us full price for the room when we had booked with a big discount). I couldn't use my card for the last week of my trip, and as we are not from the U.S. my other credit card would not work in Hawaii. I was eventually refunded the excess charges (MONTHS later) due to our complaining about the room quality once my credit card was overdrafted, but it still soured the end of our trip.
Stayed in this hotel over Thanksgiving 2008 - my third time at Moana Surfrider. First couple of times were outstanding! Old world charm with great service and ambiance.
My most recent stay was something I would rather forget. Room...

This was my first stay at the Moana since it has changed management to Westin. The hotel is still beautiful, although not as lavishly decorated for Christmas as it was last year. I had requested a room in the Diamond Head wing, which we had previously. I was told by the front desk that we were upgraded to the Tower Wing, which I could not fully comprehend since the cost of the Oceanfront Diamond Wing room was the priciest of non-suite guest rooms. Neither the Tower room nor its lanai was as large as the room we occupied in the Diamond Wing last year, so where the upgrade comes in, I don't know. We did have some issues with the hotel this time, calling the front desk and having the phone ring more than a dozen times without being picked up, but the worst was the construction noise during the day. The front desk staff and their attitude has definitely changed since last year. We didn't feel that sense of Aloha, but more of a bother, and this with no other guests at the front desk. The lei greeting still remains, but they replaced the delicious guava juice with a lemongrass drink that was not to my taste. Room amenities were very good, the coffee maker and refrigerator free of charge were nice additions, especially the refrigerator that was a nice sized hotel room refrig and thankfully no mini-bar. The rooms were recently renovated and everything was new, including the large screen plasma TV. Housekeeping was timely and the room was always clean and neat when we would come back to our room in the afternoon. I couldn't see the point though of having the closet in the bathroom. Service at the pool bar was fantastic as well as the evening entertainment. When I arrived home, I did snail mail the new hotel manager and voiced my concerns and received an email from his executive assistant offering me two nights compensation on a future visit in the wing that I prefer. We've spoken by phone and she has been nothing but gracious, so I still have to give the Moana an excellent rating. If something is wrong, they will fix it. My anniversary this time was also noted on the reservation and never acknowledged; last year we received a bottle of champagne and a note from the manager. I love Hawaii, I love Waikiki and even though I experienced several problems, I still love the Moana.

The hotel is absolutely beautiful; the lobby, the courtyard, the front porch, all amazing. However, the room was very disappointing. It was not at all what we were expecting, and did not live up to its description. While the bed was comfortable, and ...

I will choose another "cheaper" hotel next time. Expensiev is not usually the best. The room is so small and the couple live next to us they fight every night. Therefore, I can't sleep well during the night. But I like the location of this hotel and ...
Well the service was great. The view from you're room is so beautiful, the only thing that doesn't seem too great is the money. Lot's of money. The people there are nice and kind. And it's great to bring the kids, and to enjoy a...
