We own a timeshare week at the Mayan Palace Resorts. The Puerto Penasco location is on the Sea of Cortez about a 5 hour drive from Phoenix.
The warning is that much of the resort is under construction. 25-40 of the best ocean view rooms were not available during our stay (2/17-2/24/07). We were placed in a first floor room overlooking the driveway. The outdoor pool was not heated. Indoor pool was warm, but had a harsh chlorine smell.
There are few food options beyond a buffet at both breakfast and dinner. Especially in the morning, only a pricey buffet was available. The town is 20 miles away, and that's the closest alternative for dining.
The hotel staff was congenial, but not helpful at all. My experience is that once you are in a room, you stay there. We kept getting our hopes up that we would be moved during the week, but it didn't happen.
The last morning we had water leaking from the ceiling, we were sorry it didn't happen earlier in the week! This is the worst experience I've had at a Mayan Palace. We usually are very happy and have enjoyed weeks in Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta and
Mazatlan.
It appears that Puerto Penasco is trying to grow too quickly and just doesn't care about keeping their owners happy. This would be doubly true if you are using an RCI week on your visit. Expect no view, pricey food and the constant clang of construction.
