We attended a wedding where the guests stayed at this hotel for several days. The conversation among the guests was consistently centered on how terrible the hotel was, and no one could believe how bad the rooms and facilities were, or how badly they were treated by the staff. This was not just one or two people - it was 10-20 who all had similar experiences. Some of the rooms have been remodeled and some have not - if you get one of the old ones, you are REALLY in trouble. The room we started in had peeling paint all over the ceiling, walls, and trim, had a large area (maybe 8-10") of the bathtub where the white finish was peeled back and sticking up, had old and worn out furniture, and had just about no hot water - and those are just the top issues. We got them to move us to a "remodeled" room, which was much better - but still very bad. New floor, appliances, etc., but still ancient furniture with the finish worn off, the vent in the ceiling at the front of the room dripped water so there were puddles on the (hard tile) floor, the tub made an awful screeching/groaning noise until you switched the control to direct the water out the shower head and not the tub faucet, the hot water came and went as you showered, the water would not completely shut off in the tub, the light fixtures had never been fully installed and there were bare bulbs with no covers over them, etc. When they moved us to the new room, they gave me keys and I was moving my things in, and on the 2nd trip down I found someone else trying to move into the same room - obviously they had made a mistake, but when I called the front desk they unbelievably said "well, that is YOUR problem, not ours". The staff in general was terrible - they either paid no attention to you at all, or were arrogant. This included the concierge, the bellman, and the front desk. There were too many bad things to list them all. The lower level of the hotel, where shops are, was ancient looking and poorly maintained, and actually smelled bad. I found it interesting that while they have safes in the rooms, the safes are not attached to anything, so you can just pick them up and carry them off - and the one in our first room did not work, anyway. Do not be fooled by their pretty pictures or the apparently good prices - this is a hotel to avoid if you have any choice at all.

Note that I am not a "complainer". I travel quite a bit, and I am easy to please - I expect minor glitches and irritations from time to time. This is the first hotel I have felt this way about in many years.

The location was great for the price; right on the beach with some restaurants within walking distance and short drive to major mall. The pool area and outside bars were nice and they had small pizza resaurant and well stocked gift shop on site. Great for kids and families. Continental breakfast included for 2 persons only, otherwise $8.00 per person (with tax and gratuities included).

I am somewhat likely to return to the Marco Polo Beach Resort Ramada Plaza.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.

The Marco Polo is conveniently located in North Miami Beach, a few minutes drive from Aventura Mall.

The hotel is a combination of apartments and rooms for rent. The lobby is elegant and attractive, packed to the gills with elderly residents and guests of all ages and nationalities.

Our room had recently undergone a tacky renovation with poorly designed lighting, repainted bathtub with rubber stopper, and Rube Goldberg faucet. The new mirrored closet doors don't fit the old tracks and don't close properly. The beds sag and creak. Water in the shower never gets above lukewarm.

The kitchen has an electric stove and refrigerator, which work fine and are very handy, but a microwave would be even nicer. Elevators are old and slow, but not as slow as the undermanned valet service for the cars, which can involve up to a 15 minute wait. The pool is old, but well maintained.

The bar area on the pool deck , as well as the lower level, is old and shabby, or kitschy, if you prefer. The staff seems overwhelmed. One clerk asked me if I was old enough to register (I am 54). We had our electronic lock disabled for the Sabbath and it has still not been turned on again, despite daily requests. A free newspaper is delivered to your door and a generous and free buffet breakfast is available daily in the dining room, but bring some sharp elbows. Rates are reasonable and you pretty much get what you pay for.
