member icon My jewelry was stolen at La Valencia Hot
Posted Feb 29, 08 by cyndikus, 1 reviews, 1 is a Top Review
51 year old woman with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

My company booked a meeting at La Valencia Hotel, it was a good meeting. Unfortunately I left my jewelry bag with about 6 pieces of jewelry worth about $1,000 in the bathroom drawer. I called the hotel to ask them if it was found, they sent me to housekeeping, they promised to check and call me back. They never called back... so when I followed up an hour later the maid left a message for her colleagues to call me at my number to tell me they didn't find the jewelry. The Business Manager CP blew me off as well telling me they will investigate and then finally sending me an email that the insurance was investigating, they sent me a letter saying they aren't liable. So anyway watch your stuff at this hotel because the maids have a license to steal! By the way the jewelry was from my sister who died a year ago, so I hope whoever stole it appreciates the cheap jewelry has real value to me.

member icon THE WORST DINNER OF MY LIFE!!!!
Posted Feb 23, 08 by 8588770282, 1 reviews, 1 is a Top Review
47 year old woman with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

My Boyfriend and I went here for a Valentine's dinner. When we made the reservations, they failed to tell us that they were serving a limited menu of either beef short ribs or fish of some unmemorable type. All the food was made well ahead of time and kept warm so nothing was off the grill. The soup was an abomination of some unknown concoction with a prawn stuck in it for God only knows why. This prawn was whole, frozen, thawed, dipped in batter (even the eyes were in pasty batter, staring at you) and chewy, they must have bought it by the box from as Asain market off of Clairmont Mesa Blvd. The salad was made of (get this) endive. Endive is very, very bitter and it was so small. Then they served this ridiculous little spoons of something like butter with salmon in it. It tasted like old refigerated margerine. This dinner came at the insulting price of $75 per plate. Now for that much money I would expect prime rib, or filet migon, or anything but a cheap cut of beef like short ribs or local sea bass.

WHAT A RIP OFF. We were no way warned that we would not be ordering from the regular menu and they really took advantage of it. I will NEVER go there again. Talk about taking advantage of the consumer.

The Mediterranean Room and Tropical Patio at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Mediterranean Room offers a warm and cozy ambiance with a sweeping view of the Pacific.

This is a review of the pre made 2/14/08 Valentine Dinner.

Positive:

1. Past Reviews

2. Location and valet parking very satisfactory

3. The atmosphere is beautiful and elegant with incredible views.

Negative:

1. I felt the food was not worth the value and lacks any variety. The bread was not warm. It consisted of 4 slices of cold sour dough. The soup was a nasty shrimp broth with 1 deep fried giant shrimp dangling on one side. The salad was very rough blend of greens. Both the main dishes were lacking in flavor and imagination. .

2. The service needs improved etiquette skills with the Mediterranean Room.

3. The dessert etc are the same in almost all restaurants and lacks a homemade chef touch.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a romantic dinner don't bother coming to the La Valencia Valentine Dinner in the Mediterranean Room. It lacks surprises or should I say it full of surprises! You will be spending most of your evening arguing over the horrible choice of food selection and service. The pre arrange meal is not worth the $75.00 per person rate. I felt taken advantage or a better word be robbed by a holiday meal with no imagination. The food was very unsatisfactory.

Btw, I did leave a the standard 15% gratuity plus 1 penny under the water glass.

My wife and I waited half an hour for our order to be taken and then waited over an hour and a half. Nothing. Finally, we left because we had to be somewhere else. Judging from the other people around us, it may have taken at least another half hour for the food to arrive. I should add that the Whaling Bar is nice. I would never eat at this hotel, however. Well, let me amend that; I would eat there, but only if I had a full meal somewhere else first.
