I had booked a room with a balcony and view. One sentence summary – horrible tiny room, with minuscule bathroom, no view, no balcony and a sullen, unhelpful staff. Room bore NO resemblance to ANY pictures of any rooms on hotel website.
The woman who guided me to my room was glum and pretty much threw my suitcase into the room. After I gave her a tip she vaguely showed me how to operate the air conditioning remote control unit and left. The room was so small that I essentially could not walk around the bed.
The bathroom was tiny. The bidet was unusable because there was no space between it and the shower area. The plug and inner mechanism of the bidet were lying on top of the bidet. The sink plug and mechanism had also been taken out and was sitting on top of the sink. The shower was tiny and without an enclosure or a sufficiently high rim, so taking a shower resulted in flooding the entire bathroom.
A door lead not to a balcony, but to a tiny patio area facing a wall on which grew mold. Some kind of loudly humming air conditioning unit took up most of this outdoor space. Two forlorn cheap plastic chairs completed the picture.
There was no book – which most hotel rooms in the known universe have – with explanations about amenities, room service menus, etc. The TV remote control did not work; the complicated room safe worked sporadically and required two calls to the front desk to open.
When I went to the front desk to complain about the fact that I was not in a room with a balcony and a view (for which I had paid extra) I was told that they would attempt to relocate me the next day after 2pm. No apologies were given.
A sleepless night ensued because the room had paper thin walls and I could hear everything going on in the hallways, elevator, room next door, etc. The following morning, at 9 am, a friend who is a long time Capri resident and who speaks fluent Italian called and complained on my behalf about the room to the front desk manager. Within seconds, the manager called and offered to move me immediately to my choice of three different rooms.
By then I had packed my bags and decided to check out – which I promptly did. As a single non-Italian woman, I felt that I had initially been taken advantage of and made to feel completely unwelcome. It’s called the HOSPITALITY industry, REMEMBER?
