In 1787, the founder of Gettysburg, James Gettys, sold his first piece of land to John Troxell, Sr. In 1804, a tavern Sign of the Buck was opened to accomodate those traveling to the western frontier of Pennsylvania and beyond. This structure has served as an inn, tavern or hotel for almost 200 years, and was used as a hospital for the wounded soldiers during the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1888, the third and fourth floors were added to accomodate the veterans as they returned to Gettysburg for the 25th Anniversary of the Battle. From 1888 to the late 1930's, the hotel could accomodate 250 guests a night. The hotel was later used as an apartment building and also a youth hostel. In 1995, the building changed ownership to reopen as the James Gettys Hotel in September, 1996. The building has had nine different names during its 193 years of existence and today each suite is named after a previous business or person who played a significant role in the hotel's history. The James Gettys Hotel offers eleven tastefully appointed suites each with sitting area, kitchenette, bedroom, private bath, and all the comforts of home.
