We have been to Napa many times and by far was this the best place we have ever stayed at. The service was excellent, the location was perfect, and the room was to die for. We couldn't wait to see what the next day's breakfast would be. I can't recomend this oasis more.

The Inn is very beautiful, and very clean. The surrounding grounds and vineyard are a sight to see and enjoy. The observation tower was a real treat, we spent the evenings up there, but the owners need to replace the rattan furniture it is not comfortable at all. We stayed in the French Room, which was very clean.
However, there is no resident inn keeper, and we were left there alone on our first night, as there were no other guests in the Inn. The morning cook, if you can call her that, was not friendly or warm, the breakfast was just a little bit of fruit, scrambled eggs and some potatoes that tasted like frozen potatoes. The breads were cold, and the coffee was terrible.
The afternoon staff was different, helpful and warm. The afternoon cheese, fruit and cracker appetizers and wine were well prepared and very generous. The next day there were two more couples and the breakfast food improved, but not enough to live up to the website description of a champagne gourmet breakfast, and still the unfriendly cook was there again. She never even told us her name. We stayed three nights and during that time there were never any inviting smells from the kitchen.
It seems the owners do not even live in St. Helena, we were also told not to call the local innkeeper unless the house was on fire. We also did not realize that the inn is located right next to the highway and you can hear the traffic all night and in the early morning rush it gets louder.
We were also told that The Inn is up for sale, maybe the new owners will pay more attention to details and hire a new cook.

We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay at the Ink House. Incredible value at $175 for our room -- most Napa Inns were charging $300 or way more per night. The house and grounds are great - 4 acres of vineyards, olives, massive lawns, and gardens right in the prime Rutherford area at the southern edge of St. Helena.
The staff was very helpful and helped us out with concierge services, produced gourmet breakfasts for us each morning, and hosted vintners pouring with the appetizers in the afternoon which was quite a treat! It's within easy walking distance of 4-5 first class wineries (Whitehall Lane, Franciscan, etc.), but if you use the guest bicycles like we did you are in range of probably 50 or more wineries without having to drive.
The rooms were well-appointed with queen size beds, antiques, and private bathrooms but weren't that large. The top of the house has a wonderful glass observatory that puts you about 40 feet above the valley and the bottom of the house has an old stone basement that is now a game room hosting a poker table and pool table. There's also a regulation horseshoe pit out by the barn and croquet and bocce equipment to use on the grand back lawn. A wonderful two days, wish we had had more time!
