Excellent
with a budget, traveling for leisure

Stayed there for a week. Had a great time. Received good service for reasonable money. Do not expcet 5 stars, but in pretty good condition, with all the necessary services.

Customer service does not exist at this hotel. What was promised to us when we booked the room and what they gave us were totally different. The staff were rude, their practices were shady and the service was unacceptable. They charged us a "resort fee" even though we had told them we would not be using any of the "resort" accommodations as we were getting in late and leaving early. They tack on charges in fine print when you sign in so be careful if you go here. The room was expensive ($220 for 2 people), yet uncomfortable and shabby.

Horrible
38 year old female with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

The hotel rooms were completely unacceptable. There was plaster falling from the walls onto my personal items located on my desk. The bathrooms were outdated and very small. The lightening in the bathrooms were very dim. There was a stink of urine in the bathroom. We requested non-smoking rooms and were given smoking rooms that wrecked of stale cigarette smoke. It took them almost 2 hours to change our rooms to non-smoking and those rooms weren't too much better. There were little tiny bugs all over the floor, in the sink and on the desk. The breakfeast buffet was $9.00 and the food was very limiting and not very good. The best part of breakfeast was a bowl of ceral with bananas. The only nice thing about the hotel was the swimming pool area and the quick access to the beautiful beach area. I would NOT recommend anyone to stay at this hotel until they do some much needed renovations.

The Worst Hotel Ever – Posted Mar 12, 2008

Horrible
30 year old female with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

This was supposed to be a 30th birthday celebration (March 6th through March 9th 2008) and it turned into a nightmare. We arrived and our room was given away earlier. I had a reservation and couldn't believe this. The clerk acted as if this was nothing new. Even though we were bumped up to a suite, it was a joke. It was facing the back of the hotel and the balconies were joined by a "jump over" mini wall which meant anyone could walk into your room if you left the balcony door open by mistake.

The foolishness continued when we tried to get towels and the house keepers didn't speak English...last time I checked we were in America. We had to walk down to the front desk and no one was there. It was only 8 p.m.!!

There were bugs in the bathroom, the bed was filthy, the closet hangers were rusty, you could hear through the walls, the television only had four channels, the elevator tooks days to come to your floor, the pool was full of sand, the parking lot was a joke (there were no parking spaces even when you paid $10 a night to park). The website said it was only $8. Then there was a "Resort Fee" of $8 a day which was stupid. This place is a dump and shouldn't even be considered a hotel let alone a resort.

I was glad to check out as I will never return to this location. The website and photos are very misleading. Please post the real photos. My suite looked nothing like the beautiful room showed on the website.

Save yourself the time and the money and book at a better hotel. You'll be glad you did.

Okay

The hotel was very nice and it had a very personable staff. It was close to the beach.

I am very likely to return to the Howard Johnson Plaza Dezerland Beach & Spa.
I might recommend it to friends.

Never again will stay here. this hotel was the worst hotel i've ever been in. the hotel staff was rude when you call to ask for towels because house keeping never answered the phone. at one point i went to take a shower only to find that there was no water. when i called to inquire about the water outage, i was informed that the hotel was going through some sort of maintainance emergency that required a 1 and half to 2 hour water outage. i was outraged because it was 10am and i had somewhere to be, not to mention they could have informed the guests that there would be no water or that they were having a water crisis instead of us finding it out the hard way. i will never again sacrifice comfort and hospitality for cheap and rude. it's true what they say, you get what you pay for.

I am not likely to return to the Howard Johnson Plaza Dezerland Beach & Spa.
I would not recommend it to friends.

The location was good. Our room was tiny and in disrepair. The bathroom fixtures were loose and the water did not stay hot. There was no room service.

I am not likely to return to the Howard Johnson Plaza Dezerland Beach & Spa.
I would not recommend it to friends.

You need a car to stay here – Posted Mar 04, 2007

This is not the place to stay if you do not have a car. The hotel is cutting corners, from the light bulbs (low watt) to the lack of food in the restaurant.

The bathrooms are too dark to dry hair, or put on makeup. The sheets fell off the bed, (too small for the bed). The kitchen was marginal. We ordered a mushroom pizza (frozen) they were out of mushrooms we asked for 3 other things they were out of. The buffet breakfast was a joke. They were out of dishes and knifes when we went to breakfast waited for approximately 12 dishes to come out 6 being to dirty to use. We watched this take place over and over while we ate our breakfast using the spoon to spread the butter on white bread only toast. The fresh fruit was canned fruit cocktail in heavy syrup. One waitress and 3 other people were looking busy, accomplishing nothing. Asked for a cup of coffee waited 20 min then got up and got it ourselves. I felt bad for the waitress, she had nothing to work with, and no staff that was effective. I have waitressed in the past and know how hard it is. They tack on the tip "serving fee" as well.

Unless you have a car you are stuck there, a taxi ride to the closest restaurant is 10$. A beautiful park is next door, but would not go there in the dark. There’s low income housing across the street. The beach was beautiful. The room was nothing special, tile floor was sticky. The room smelled of smoke. There were lots of single women in the lobby and the bar. I would not go there again, what I saved in the price of the room I spent in taxi fees.

We spoke with others 60-90$ from FLL airport. Was quoted 25$ by the hotel. We were thankful it was only for one night.

Don't believe in their rates! – Posted Feb 04, 2007

Howard Johnson’s own pages (hojo) advertise their rates calling them "Always Our Guaranteed Best Available Rate" and tell you that if you find a lower rate somewhere else, they'll give you your first night free.

Well, don't believe that!

We booked our hotel through their pages and a couple of hours later found a cheaper price for the same room and same time from other pages. We complained and sent the link to hojo, but the answer was that it wasn't "the same" as there were other questions asked in those other pages than was asked in hojo's page.

After this we found even some more pages with lower rates and sent them all the links. Nothing was enough! They kept sending us machine-made messages with the same words: the pages don't have exactly the same information. Answering to these messages produced nothing, no-one explained us why it exactly was different in their opinion.

So, we would have got the room cheaper from other pages and their "guarantee" was nothing. So we really can't recommend you to book your stay through hojo pages.
