I just recently (9/21/07-9/23/07; room 134) stayed at the Howard Johnson in Waldport, Oregon and am totally disgusted with the condition of the room, the quality (and lack of attention to details) by the cleaning staff, and the condition of the grounds (including the thinness of the walls). My 15-year old daughter and I drove down to Waldport to visit my elderly father who lives in the area. He is unable to travel on his on and can no longer drive, so the Howard Johnson is a convenient location. Usually when I go to visit, I stay either in Yachats or Newport as Waldport does not have a huge selection of lodging to choose from. When I noticed that Howard Johnson had taken over the Bayshore Inn, I thought that I would try this location. However, even though the hotel is convenient, I will NEVER return!
When I checked in, the front desk was filthy. There were little bits of paper all over the floor behind the desk and the walls were covered in dirt. The gal who checked me in was more interested in talking on the phone then making sure that I was checked in. She was no where NEAR professional; she just wanted me gone so she could get back to her conversation. (Same thing happened when I checked out!)
The room was filthy. The carpets are in SERIOUS need of replacement, the chairs in the room were COVERED in stains - enough so that I was actually afraid to sit on them. The carpets were so disgusting that I refused to take my socks and shoes off for fear of what may be lurking beneath. My daughters bed covers were filthy with some 'orange' stain and the mattresses were also filthy! The bathroom showed signs of 'attempted' repairs, though not complete. The bathroom fan was hanging on by a thread and I feared that it would fall from the ceiling when we used it. The ceiling above the shower showed signs of mold, which it looked like there had been an attempt to repair/repaint to hide. The heater did not work properly; the room was either FREEZING or BOILING, there did not seem to be any temperature in between. The single pane windows did not have screens (a safety hazard for children) and did not lock securely. Being on the bottom floor, the fear of someone crawling through the window at night was a real fear!
The cleaning staff forgot to put regular coffee in the room for the coffee pot; though a single packet of decaf was available. I had to call the front desk in the morning to request coffee in my room; something which is supposed to be complimentary! On Saturday, the cleaning staff came into our room and made the beds but I believe that is all they did! There was trash left on the table! They were kind enough to leave the little bottles of lotion and condition, the shower cap, and the soap however they over looked the shampoo!
The walls in the hotel are as thin as paper; to the point where we could hear the guest whispering in the room next door. You could hear people walking down the hallway on the first floor and the second floor. The stairs to the second floor were right outside our room, and you could hear EVERY footstep and child running up and down the stairs at all hours of the night. The doors to the outside did not lock or close properly and the door to my room would not close without slamming it HARD.
The one thing that sealed the deal and clearly made up my mind to NEVER return was when the neighbors started having sex in the room next door on Saturday evening. The only thing that we missed was the actual show, we could hear EVERYTHING as if they were in our room. The walls are WAY too thin! My 15-year old daughter was disgusted and we both felt dirty! As a hotel that tries to cater to families, this is unacceptable!
Because of the state of the rooms, I was afraid to eat in the attached restaurant and couldn't WAIT to check out and leave. I will return to Waldport to visit my father, however I will spend the extra money and stay in a hotel that respects their guests. This hotel is nothing short of a low-income hourly prostitute hangout!
