I have never written an online review before, but thought I should as my experience was so much better than I expected it would be.
I was impressed with this hotel from the minute I checked in until I checked out. The staff was very friendly and made me feel very welcome as soon as I walked in the door. The room was very large and very nice (especially for a Howard Johnson!) There was a refrigerator and microwave, which was an added bonus. The breakfast was excellent and is served in a room nicer than the restaurant we ate in the night before! The pool looked great, though we were too busy to use it.
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay, and feel like I got a steal on the rate. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and will definitely be using it again on my next trip to Delaware
I am very likely
to return to the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites and Conference Center.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.

in trying to make a reservation for my upcoming trip for my cousins wedding, i attempted to call howard johnson as my cousin had mentioned it was right of the highway. when i called, no one answered! it went right to a holding message and bad elevator music. when someone finally did answer 7 minutes later, they acted like i had just interupted an important conversation as there was still a lot of personal discussion going on in the background. when i asked if there was availability for the date they said"plenty of rooms" and hung up on me.now i understand that people have bad days but that is no way to get business. i ended up staying at a hotel a little further up the road that was very couteous. i will never call this hotel again, let alone stay there.

We booked this reservation because of the discounted rate, however we were very happy to discover that we got much more than we expected.
The gentlemen at the front desk were very friendly, and even made conversation with the kids while my husband and I were checking-in.
The room was much larger than a normal hotel room, and the Queen beds were great as there were four of us. The furnishings looked brand new, and the fridge and microwave were incredibly convenient. The wireless Internet (free!) was an added bonus, as I was able to stay in the room with the kids rather than go to business center downstairs in the lobby.
The breakfast room was incredible. It is much bigger than most hotels'. My husband loved the big flat-screen tv=) and the kids loved the make-your-own waffles. There is a Friendly's Restaurant in the hotel parking lot which was great for us with the kids. However, we also saw several other restaurants close-by that you could walk to.
The hotel was very convenient to the University and downtown Newark. It was a quick 5 minute drive into town, and you get to drive through the campus which is really a sight (worth doing if you have the time).
All in all, we were very happy with our stay and wanted to make sure we let others know what a great deal this hotel is. No, it is not a 4-star, but for those of us who can't afford 4-stars right now, this hotel is much better than its 2-star listing.

Okay
This is a partially refurbished old "HoJo" hotel. There are 3 buildings interconnected, and navigating your way through the maze is confusing. There's 3 stories, and no elevator, so be prepared to lug your luggage up the never ending stairways. The...

Good
Had a nice surprise, upon arrival was greeted by a professional front desk person, pleasant and well mannered. The room was clean and up to date, with everthing in working order. Room was cleaned every day, and all items restocked. Breakfast area...
We would like to courteously point out that the 2nd and 3rd reviews below this discuss OTHER Howard Johnson properties. In the 2nd review, the guest mentions her trip was to Osage Beach, MO. We are located in Delaware, which is a completely different property and not affiliated with the property she mentions. In the 3rd review, the guests mention both a night club next door and Honeymoon Suite in the hotel. We have no night clubs within 20 miles of our property and no Honeymoon Suite. In addition, we have never had a need for a police presence on our property, let alone on the property swinging their nightsticks. We can only guess that the customer accidentally posted the comment to the wrong hotel.
In regard to the 1st review: We sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you experienced while staying with us. The hotel underwent full renovations from March to May 2008. We now have all new bedding, carpeting, furniture, drapes, walls, and artwork in every guest room and suite. (We also replaced all malfunctioning air conditioners.) We hope that you will try us again in our new state!

Good
The Howard Johson Inn Suites wasn't fancy but it certainly fills the need for a fine place to stay at a reasonable price. The continental breakfast was quite welcome. My room was equpped with a microwave, refrigerator, hair drier, and iron. They...

I'm staying at the jacuzzi room for about $150. The sheets on the bed look like they're from the 70s, the 'couch' and the 'chair'.. you could honestly find better furniture at the thrift store! The heating/ac unit is old, makes odd noises along with the jacuzzi. You will hear a loud random noise.
I called to get some shampoo only to be told rudely 'come to the front, i'll give it'. This is bs, not professional at all. The back entrance is really ugly and needs to be cleaned.
Why am I paying $150? And just noticing now, the cover to the AC is missing... there's a stain on the side of the sheets...
I won't be giving my business here. There is no 'quality' in any area here.

This Howard Johnson hotel is conveniently located within sight of the Interstate 95. It is usually inexpensive. However, during NASCAR events, the room prices are sky high.
I am somewhat likely
to return to the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites and Conference Center.
I might recommend it to friends.
