I was excited to stay in the Hotel Roanoke (HR) but, it failed to meet expectations. I spent two weeks in the HR on business and was very disappointed. It has a nice lobby and an inviting exterior but, that’s where the plus sides end. These were the problems I had:
• They lost my reservation: I booked two weeks in advance and called ahead to confirm my reservation twice. When I showed up to check in they lost my reservation and I had to go to another hotel for the first night.
• Under construction: I had to work a few night shifts so I slept during the day. They were hanging drywall next door so I had to have my room moved and they failed to notify me before hand.
• It’s noisy: My second room was on the bottom floor and whenever somebody would leave the door right next to my room would slam shut. It sounded like I was sleeping in a bowling ally at all hours of the night.
• There petty: They charge $12.00 a day to get on the internet. When you are paying $110.00+ a night for a room this type of charge is outrages to me considering any coffee shop will give it to you for free and it costs the HR almost nothing.
• Parking is awful: you pay $13.00 or so a day for parking. Give me a break
• Bad showers: they have poor water pressure and it takes a long time to get the temperature so it is not freezing cold or scalding hot.
• TV is annoying: it always starts up on the “buy something channel” at a high volume so you have to hear there ads and they want to charge you something outrageous for it.
The HR relies on it’s reputation of being the oldest hotel in the city and its exterior looks to draw people in. Once they have your money I feel like they take advantage of you. If you are just staying over night the HR and you get a good room it might work for you. However for a hotel that preached quality they are far from it.
