I am a person who looks at things pragmatically. A matter of fact, this is my first review of a hotel. i wouldnt even bother writing reviews, but this is SO worth it. As a financial analyst who has travelled the world (this includes boarding school in Europe, and living in the United States, as well as Asia, traveling to developing countries, underdeveloped countries throughout my life, staying from hostels -> five star hotels) I really try to reason with hotels, really look at the value between price and service, etc.) Hotel Penn has really defied my perception of the hospitality industry. The only thing good about this hotel is the fact that it is opposite of Madison Square Garden (which can be debated, because it gets extremely loud at night). When you arrive at the entrance, you are warmly invited to a nice marble lobby. Dont ever judge a book by its cover.
It takes on average, one hour to get checked in. (I would know this because my key card repeatedly kept on malfunctioning, the excuse from the concierge being that every time I go through a magnetic field, this includes ANY security detector when you enter retail stores in Manhatta, the card gets demagnetized.). I had to wait in line THREE times for an hour, just to get into my room.
The lobby service is horrible. I dont know if they REALLY went to hotel school, because it takes them on average (and I timed them) 11.5 minutes per check in. I actually overhead one of them talk about where to go clubbing and women with one of the people checking in for 10 minutes while there was a long line of an impatient crowd waiting.
Now there is the room. (looking around right now) The room has NOT been maintained. The toilets have NOT been scrubbed. Towels smell like body oder from other people who have been at the hotel in the past. The air conditioner does not work. The windows do not open. The humidity from when you take a shower stays in the room because of a lack of circulation. This means that you will be sweating while you sleep. (unless you dont take a shower before going to bed) There are cracks all over the ceiling, the internet connection does NOT work (Im taking connection from Penn Station). The bed smells like someone slept on it. Smell it. Please.
Now there is the room service. It took 30 minutes for me to get fresh towels (because the towels in the room smelled like they were unwashed). I had to call room service THREE times. and when the guy FINALLY came, had the nerve to ask me for a tip.
The concierge act like they dont care. I asked where to find the New York Institute of Finance, and the guy asked me to go to my room and call room service, and got mad at me because I told him that it was his job. (yes, unbelievable)
oh yeah, the elevator doors close AFTER the floor doors closes on some floors. (I dont know if that is even legal). Yesterday, we were stuck inside the elevator for about 5 minutes. dont know why. people started to panic.

This hotel was not very clean and the service was terrible. I had left belongings at the hotel and when I came back to New York, it took a half hour just to get through to housekeeping who then informed me they couldn't help because the supervisor wasn't around. I then came back another day and finally got through to housekeeping who informed me that they had my belongings but couldn't get them because there was no one in the hotel who had keys to where they were held. I was flying back that night so didn't end up getting my things - NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. Would never stay there again and would not recommend them.

Our Hotel Pennsylvania experience started when we arrived at 7:00 p.m. on a holiday weekend. While we waited online for approximately 1 hour to check in (which we were told is relatively short) in a lobby with no air conditioning, I needed to use the restroom. The concierge sent me to a basement area straight out of a slasher movie without telling me that you needed a room key to access the restroom itself. My husband got a temporary key while I took my turn in line and, upon return from the restroom, told me that it was filthy. Once we got our room key, we walked down a hallway with doors that looked like prison cells and entered our tiny and poorly maintained room that clearly had not gotten a paint job, a tub scrubbing, or any other maintenance since the hotel was built a century ago. The air conditioning wasn’t working so we called maintenance, who pulled out the most clogged filter I’ve ever seen and said that the AC should be working by the time we came back from dinner. It wasn’t and we had to switch rooms at 11:00 at night. The 2nd room’s AC wasn’t working either, by the way.

Some people have slagged off the Pen. However, considering it is NYC, the rate and the location, I still think the hotel is good value for money. Situated in front of the Madison Square Garden and round the corner from the Empire State building the hotel location is unbeatable. Not recommended for people with high expectations.

The location was great with subway around the corner. Plenty of food nearby. When we arrived at the hotel on a Sunday, the traffic was quite busy and we double parked to quickly unload and let my husband go and park the car in a garage a few blocks ...

First off, the line to check in was an hour and a half long. You have to watch your bags the entire time. When we had to use the bathroom, we had to get a card pass, then take the elevator down into the basement. Once you got down there it was an...
