Early Fall in Evanston – Posted Nov 03, 2009

Excellent
male with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

During our recent visit to Evanston we stayed at the Hotel Orrington near Northwestern University. We were pleasantly surprised with its proximity to the campus, nearby parks and a wonderful walking opportunity along Lake Michigan.

Service met our expectations and the staff was very pleasant. We didn't hear "no" from anyone.

Our dining experience was very good and "saved" us from the hassle of "going out".

Our room decor was a little "old fashioned" but there features and amenities for our every need, and then some.

We plan to return again in the near future.

Okay

The service at H.O. is excellent -- all the personnel are friendly and professional. Downtown Evanston, however, is quite noisy, so a lot of street noise permeates the room (hard to sleep unless the...

An excellent package rate for a four – Posted May 01, 2008

Good

An excellent package rate for a four night stay allowed us to stay at this historic hotel. The building and recent renovations are in beautiful detail. The bed was very comfortable and room quiet. The staff was excellent. When I notified the staff...

Mediocre

Our room was frigid upon arrival, heat is supplied by a VERY noisy window unit which was off until we arrived. Couldn't hear the TV over the heating unit. Tried to sleep with the unit off due to the noise factor, but when off the sounds of other...

Avoid this hotel – Posted Nov 10, 2007

Horrible
42 year old female with a luxury budget, traveling for business

I loved the old Orrington. The new Orrington is a big disappointment.

This hotel was remodeled recently but it didn't show in the rooms and the new staff acted as though they never received training in customer service. The valet chatted with a delivery person for five minutes before acknowledging that we were waiting to park the car. Once we got in the room we should have turned around an walked out. The carpet was very stained. The room was old with paint chips all over the walls. The TV could not be turned up loud enough to hear the program. The window air conditioner/heater was missing the temperature dial so engineering was called to replace it. The bathroom was extremely small and the toilet was not clean upon arrival. There was visible dust in the corners and under the beds and, worst of all, when I woke in the morning I noticed blood on the underside of the duvet cover on the bed.

This hotel consistently receives a four star rating but that is not deserved. We spent $280 for this experience only to be surrounded by filth and treated poorly.

Decent hotel but not up to Omni quality. This Omni property is close to shopping, dining, Starbucks and Northwestern, but I'm not sure I'd choose to stay there again, even with the great location. I checked in just before a major football game, and the hotel was packed. The line to get to the desk took almost an hour, and there were a lot of people complaining about the rooms they'd received. They managed to "lose" my reservation and spent an hour trying to find an open room while I was continually insulted for holding up the check-in line. When I finally got to the room, I was pleased by its large size, the presence of a fridge and minibar, and the thick curtains blocking the bright winter light. And that's about where the pleasantness ended. It quickly became apparent my room had not been cleaned. The toilet paper roll was almost empty, there were empty minibar-sized bottles of Absolut next to the bed, and there was a large number of crumbs and dirt underneath the windows and all along the wall. Someone had left food in the fridge, although with an open beer. One of the lamps was burned out, the Internet connection was down (and stayed down the entire three days) and the hair dryer was missing. I called the front desk to complain and they were very nice but unfortunately, given that they were completely packed, there was nothing they could do - including send up housekeeping, as they were already gone for the night. The bed was comfortable, I had plenty of space and ultimately I didn't spend much time in the room anyway. But I don't plan on staying here again, and I definitely can't recommend it. Too many problems and no way to resolve them just left a bad taste in my mouth. There are a number of other good hotels in the area; I'll be trying one of those my next trip.

I am somewhat likely to return to the Hotel Orrington.
I might recommend it to friends.

The small rooms feature a very noisy air conditioner going on and off all night, making sleep difficult. There are no curtains (only wood shades) so at 5:00 AM the room was too bright for sleeping. A very unpleasant experience for the price. Not...
