This was our honeymoon destination, and I couldn't imagine it being much better.
Arriving at the airport, a private yacht takes you directly to the Hotel Bora Bora. The hotel is a collection of bungalows, some small and some mini-villas including small pools. We had a great bungalow on the right side of the resort (if looking at it from above), which has a private beach and is away from the yacht dock. Some folks like the over-water bungalows, but we preferred the beach and being able to walk right out on the sand was fantastic.
Everything is expensive here, including $10 milk shakes, but they're worth every penny. The food is far more European than what we were used to in Hawaii and Mexican resorts, given the French influence on the islands. Given that we were so far from civilization, all the food was outstanding, and some of the best seafood I've ever had. A must-do dinner spot is Bloody Marys really close to the hotel, where you'll pick out your dinner from a table of fresh fish before you're seated. We ate there twice!
For activities, if you're a scuba diver, you must do a dive with the Manta Rays. They are beautiful and look like something from a star wars movie. We also did a shark feeding trip which is great for snorkelers and took us right outside the barrier reef. And the snorkeling right on the reef outside the hotel is fantastic, it's the best location on the island for snorkeling that's accessible from land.
Any cons? At check in, they were going to put us in a bungalow near the dock that would have been noisy and lacking of privacy. So we had to wait 60 minutes to get situated in the great bungalow down the beach. It worked out well, but the delay was annoying, but forgotten in about 70 minutes.
This also is really a place for couples. We saw only one family there (James Cameron's - the movie director) and that's because the kids were really into scuba.
We hated to leave and can't wait to go back again.
