32 year old woman with a economy budget, traveling for leisure

I stayed alone in Hotel 17 in 9/06. Sure, the rooms are small but I wasn't there to to hang out in my room. I had a question about my a/c unit and the staff was prompt to help. They even did a load of my laundry b/c I got back too late to go to the local laundry mat! Yes, they are shared bathrooms, but I always saw someone cleaning them when I walked by. I didn't even wear flip flops down the hall (yeah, I like to live on the edge somewhat).

I consider this hotel having a LOT Of charm. Old elevator, that I only used with my luggage, took the stairs every other time. I loved walking down the QUIET street to the little cafe to eat breakfast. I never felt scared there either. I loved it so much, my husband and I are going together 7/08!

I called on 7/14/07 at night to book a reservation and the man who answered seemed extremely put out to provide any information about booking/parking, etc. The customer service is appalling.

The Hotel 17 website conveniently forgets to mention the fact that guest rooms don't have private bathrooms.

The bathrooms are clean, but I don't want to search for an open bathroom on other floors in the morning just to take a shower. The building has some 1920's charm, but it's not worth the inconvenience.

The elevator is painfully slow and too small. My room was in shabby condition. The ceiling seemed to have a leak at one time that was shoddily repaired and looked to still be growing something (mold, fungus?). The cable channel selection was pathetic and the TV picture quality terrible.

If you want style over substance, then this hotel is for you. In my opinion this place just plain sucks!

I was very upset to learn that my room did not have a private bath. I think this is an important point and is very dishonest not to mention it beforehand. I had no robe packed with me, as I was not aware that I would have to go down the hall to use the bathroom or take a bath. I asked if I could upgrade my room and their rude staff said "No way."

I think it's pretty important to mention that Hotel 17 has no private bathrooms for guests, and that one has to go down the hall to use the facilities. This is the US, not Europe. And this place charges hotel prices, not hostel prices

The wallpaper was dreary and torn (plus one wall didn't even match the rest). There is no internet connection of any kind and the TV which boasts "cable" is only New York cable and does not have HBO or the Comedy Channel. The ancient elevator was so slow as to be virtually unusable.

I'd never stay here again.
